Just took an online class by BP I was emailed via US Fish and Wildlife and I'm now officially certified for "Post Emergency Spilled Oil Cleanup". Also got a call from one of the Tri-State organizers and was asked about when I'd be available and where I was willing to travel. Super excited that I'm on "the list" now. I'm sure I get a more specific training session when I get the call. I did have some practice today b/c we got a Carolina Wren that was covered in motor oil and we washed it using the protocols set up by Tri-State.

Re: Certified
Wait I just reread that you said it was a BP class. Can I ask if this would be a paid effort? Because while I think that volunteers are seriously needed down there, I don't think BP should be recruiting for volunteers to clean up their mess.

Gerrie: the training is thru BP. Its not specific to working w/ the wildlife, just an overview of safety and teamwork and such. I'm sure I'll get the more specific wildlife training w/ Tri-State.
And BP will have to pay out for everything...I think I'll still be paid thru the Center...but the Center needs reimbursment for my time and the effort put into having someone take my place at the Center itself. Then there is gas, food, lodging. It ain't gonna be cheap. And think of all the other people who work at/permitted Wildlife Rehabbers that are going to help and are in the same situation. Some of the BP bigwigs are gonna take some paycuts and not get their Christmas Bonus.
And I'm sorry, but while everyone (including the government) is pointing fingers at each other, Obama shouldn't have been pisssing around waiting for BP to act. He's the prez, and this is a national concern and shouldn't have waited as long as he did. (oh, not supposed to go into politics....stepping away from the political soapbox).
