I need to AW the cake I made
Andrew's first birthday party was yesterday. It was an awkward
gathering, and Andrew was miserable (teething and constipated, poor
thing), but the cake was good...
When I realized how expensive it would be to get what I wanted from a bakery, I decided to make my own. I had never done any cake decorating before. I did a test cake covered in marshmallow fondant but didn't like it, so decided to cover it in buttercream with fondant decorations. I also learned how to bake a flat cake (wrap a wet towel around the pan). I am beyond thrilled with the results!

ETA: It's a three-layer banana cake with chocolate-banana filling. The design is "mod monkey." I semi-copied it from several pictures I found online.

That turned out fantastic!
Congratulations and happy belated birthday Andrew

Thanks, ladies!
Oh, it's not belated! His birthday isn't until Friday. DH's parents work every other weekend, so we had the party early so that they could come. Then it turned out MIL got their weekends confused and in the end only she could come. Sigh.
I didn't use any special supplies. Well, I bought a basic cake decorating kit from Michael's but only ended up using it to pipe the writing. I made the fondant -- really easy, just mini marshmallows, icing sugar, and a little Crisco.
Nice work!!!
What do you mean "I also learned how to bake a flat cake (wrap a wet towel around the pan)"?
Like around the bottom, sides, top? Sounds like an interesting tip.
See detailed instructions here. Basically, before you put the cake in the oven, wrap a strip of towel around the circumference of the pan and pin it to hold it in place. The wet towel allows for more even baking and results in a flat top! Works like a charm!
Happy Easter
