wineries?

Happy Monday ladies!!! DH and I are trying to think of something relatively inexpensive to do for our first anniversary. (June 6th!) We've been wanting to go visit a winery for quite some time. Our plan is to get a bottle or 2 of a 2009 wine and save it for our 25th anniversary. We thought about visiting a winery for our anniversary trip. Do any of you have local reccomendations? (We live in Kzoo, but Grand Rapids wouldn't be too far.)

My only problem with doing this is I won't be able to partake in the wine tasting. :( So any other suggestions are welcome also. This is our first and only anniversary without kids, but we don't have a lot of $ to spend. TIA!

Fenn Valley is really nice. They have an area where you can have a picnic. And they have some non alcoholic sparkling drinks :-) Most low-end wines aren't going to improve with age, though, so it might not be the best choice if you are going to save it for 25 years. For that maybe check with Tabor Hill or Warner?
  • Buying a bottle to save for your 25th probably isn't the best idea.  Most wine probably won't taste very good after that length of time.

I think St Julian is pretty close to KZoo.  I've never been there though.  I also really like Fenn Valley.  There are several wineries in the area of Coloma/Berrien Springs/Buchanan (Round Barn, Tabor Hill, Karma Vista).  I think the website for Southwest MI is miwinetrail.com

  • Fenn Valley is nice.  The Berrien Springs area wine trail can be a lot of fun too-- and I think Tabor Hill has a nice restaurant.  (The Union Pier area has a lot of fun restaurants, really.)  But, I wouldn't suggest holding onto a Michigan wine for 25 years.  White wine doesn't usually have that long a shelf-life, and the light bodied reds that you see in MI probably won't age much better.  If you want to buy a 25-year bottle, I'd suggest going to a knowledgeable wine shop (like either Russo's or Martha's Vineyard) and asking for help (and something from California, Italy, or France)...  But, be prepared to spend $50-100.

It may be safer to shoot for a 5-year bottle, especially if you're looking to buy a Michigan wine. Have fun, and congratulations on the anniversary!

  • Check out the Southwest Michigan Wine Trail website (Google search). There are a bunch to choose from!

If you end up at Contessa in Coloma, MI your H can drink while you indulge in truffles (the best in the world) at The Chocolate Garden. :)

I looooooooove Fenn Valley. It's near Saugatuck, which would make for a fun afternoon trip. But I also agree that Michigan wines aren't going to hold up to the 25-year mark.

  • Thanks for the info ladies!!!! I'm not much of a wine drinker (or a drinker at all) so I am pretty uninformed when it comes to what kind of wines age better than others. But I'll keep that in mind. (the 5 year mark might be a better idea anyway!)
