question for new teachers

Has anyone gotten a job yet?  Interview?  I'm just now finishing up my applications and was curious how everyone else is doing in their hunt.  I'm going through alternative certification and everyone is telling me that alt. cert. teachers typically don't get hired until August...if at all. Indifferent  What are you guys seeing?  Also, what content area are you applying for?  I'm math 4-8.

Re: question for new teachers

  • i'm not a new teacher, but i can tell you what i'm seeing in my district.  right now, our district is filling positions with transfers mainly.  they're still shuffling around teachers who have put in for a transfer and who already work for the district.  after this is pretty much in place, principals will start hiring from the pool of applicants.  i know our principal has already started to interview, though.

we were just talking about this at lunch the other day.  we decided that there's usually a big hiring phase around july/august because that's when our contracts are up.  a lot of teachers who are going to resign wait until then because they want to take advantage of their health coverage and they want to be paid, of course.  and since a principal can't hire until there's an official resignation, a lot of new hires occur around then.

of course, i've known teachers who were hired the night before the first day of school and some who were hired 2 days after school started, so you just never know.  good luck!

  • I'm math 8-12 and I was hired on with PISD 3 weeks ago.  I believe one of their middle schools was hiring math teachers.  Good luck!  Many schools are still waiting to see what positions need to be filled, so don't get discouraged.

(I'm just finishing my first year teaching)

  •   I agree with gwynnetx.  I don't know about new teachers but in my district I'm still seeing people transfer around.  Even without our campus we don't really know what all is happening (such as people transferring, leaving, etc.) Many teachers are waiting for transfers will could create new openings and I've heard that some of the new schools are on a hiring freeze until they know more accurate numbers for next year.  Don't stress if you aren't having luck yet, I'm sure you'll hear something as it gets closer.  (Although, I know that doesn't take the stress off, it's not just you.)

  • Just a quick update...I have a preliminary interview with AISD tomorrow!!!!!!  I'm so excited!!!  I'm also terrified as I have never had a teaching interview before and don't know what to expect.  I am feeling so hopeful right now. I pray that this goes well.
