Hot Topic

Have you seen this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvhvHBrhlOM

What do you think?

I think these girls are extremely talented dancers, but I am shocked that this is the choreography, music and costumes that were chosen for them as first graders. It makes me sad that this would be thought of as appropriate. I danced from 2.5 until age 14 and didn't have a costume that showed my stomach until I was 13 (the bottoms were also pants), my parents would also have never let me do choreography like that. I hope this is not the direction our society is moving in. DH volunteers for the Boys and Girls Club here every other week, they have a dance team who practices often when he is there. He said they are around the same age and doing similar dance moves, scary!

Re: Hot Topic

  • I know!  This upcoming generation scares me (and makes me nervous for bringing up children when we decide to have them).  On Friday I was watching "16 and Pregnant"- go ahead, judge- and the pregnant girl's friend said "well, you can't really prevent getting pregnant".  Huh? I know I grew up in Pennsylvania, which some may consider liberal/a blue state, but all we learned about was ways not to get pregnant in our health classes- except they wouldn't teach safe practices, just the "just say no" campaign but that is a whole different can of worms.
  • I think I would pull my (not yet conceived) daughter out of that dance school when I saw the costumes.

Children today seem to loose their innocence so much younger as the generations pass.  There was huge controversy over my HS dance team doing moves less provocative than that 15 years ago.  Costumes for competition with bare midriff were not allowed to be worn on school campus as a modesty thing.

On the defense though, parents (as a general) are allowing kids to listen to music with sexual themes that when I was growing up were not really "allowed" on the radio.  The closest thing to that video was Michael Jackson's groin grabbing.  My mom put a stop to my brother's imitation of that dance move really quickly.

If my son or daughter wants to dance, I have no problem supporting that choice.  I will, however, encourage classical or ballroom style dance instead of modern.

I think I will encourage sports over dance though.  Sports get energy out and I like how it promotes working with other people and can provide an encouraging environment for future skills.

I danced ballet, tap, jazz and modern. The music choices my instructors made were nothing like "single ladies". There is nothing wrong with dance classes, the problem comes when mainstream "club music" is used for 7 year old girls. DH's little cousin is 10 and dances with the Hamilton Conservatory, she is an unbelievable ballet dancer who just got back from performing in the Nutcracker with the Cuban National Ballet. I would definitely put my (not yet conceived) daughter in ballet if she wanted to my nieces are in ballet, but would re-think hip-hop/modern classes depending on the style being taught.

You brought up a good point that I failed to convey: music choices.

I think I lean toward classical/ballroom styles because the ability to choose music is much different than modern dance.  I don't have a problem with modern dance, just the choices being made for children that are more appropriate for the 18+ crowd.

  • I sat here and watched that video, and felt my jaw literally drop.  Then I started wondering why in the heck the crowd was cheering so loud for dance moves my mom would STILL not approve of me doing -- and I'm married!  The nail was hit on the head by pp's, though; it's all in what the parents allow their children to do.

My future kids will NOT be participating in anything remotely resembling anything that was done in that performance, including the musical genre chosen.  Otherwise, I may as well give them cell phones and show them how to "sext" myself.

  • I think this video and the parents get the Facepalm of the month award!
  • And then the parents should be lined up and slapped repeatedly one by one. Nobody is allowed to get out of line until they have gotten their slappings!
  • I saw this the other day on the news.  DH and I couldn't believe the outfits.  Who would let their daughter wear those.  I agree with PP, I couldn't believe that the audience was screaming and clapping so much.  It seems each generation is getting worse.
  • I agree with the previous posts, I am appalled at this video!  I wouldn't want my not yet concieved daughter prancing around in something like this.
