Roc - rec a downtown place to meet / drinks

Our friends recently got engaged and we'd like to take them out sometime this week to toast their engagement and maybe get some apps. We'd probably like to meet someplace downtown as they live on the way west side and we live on the way east side but we all work in the city.

I thought about maybe making up a picnic basket with some snacks and buying a bottle of bubbly and going to a park, but I don't think you're allowed to bring alcohol into the city parks.

I never go to restaurants / parks/ bars downtown, so I don't know where to go. I'd love someplace that's cute, with the possibility of sitting outside with a nice view and perhaps the ability to get some champagne - oh yeah, and isn't ridiculously expensive. Suggestions? Is Triphammers by the waterfall still a restaurant that's open?

I think Triphammer's is closed, or will be shortly (?). When DH got his masters, we took his parents to Virtu, which has a patio right along the river with a great view of the Freddie Sue bridge. I think it would be a great spot for drinks/apps.  The food was yummy and the service was good.

  • Virtu is nice, so is Panzari's (across Exchange Street, near Nathaniel's Pub).  I also like the Old Toad, which is more of a cozy pub.

  • Salenas in village gate is great, they have an outdoor patio thing and the food is DELICIOUS (and not very expensive)... I'm not sure about champagne, but they have really really good margaritas.
  • Thanks, ladies! We ended up going to Magnolia's on Park Ave. It was fun - reasonably priced bottles of wine  - well, reasonable for a restaurant (all bottles are $23). And the food was pretty tasty!
