Oh, and watering.  You will want to water deeply and then wait until it turns a purple haze in the evening and not be refreshed by the morning dew and water again. This will teach it to grow deep and eventually you will end up watering less. GL!

More please! What do you mean by this? We just got most of our front lawn resodded (hours spent weeding wasted!) and I want to make sure it survives!

Re: ***PMBridetobe***

  • St. Augustine is typically a weedy type grass with runners.  It will spread its runners but not really go deep if you give it too much water.  It will come to depend on that instead of using its root system to get water.

What we were told by a horticulturalist in SA is to teach it to go deep.  In order to do this, you want to soak the lawn and then watch it every night.  In the night, it may turn a purple hazy.  It will also wilt a bit.  However, in the morning it should be perky since the morning due will refresh it.  There should be no haze in it.  If it is still limpy in the morning, it needs water.  Go ahead and soak it again.  Eventually, the days before it turns purple will length.  About 3 years ago, in the middle of summer, we could go almost 3 weeks without watering our St. Augustine and we had a very nice lawn.

DH used to keep sodding every year instead of watering it like it needs.  Now, we are firm believers in it.   The best time to soak it is 6am so that it is not sitting on the grass too long before the sun comes up.  Otherwise you will get a fungal infection.

Sorry, this is so long! I love my St. Augustine and really try to take care of it so I can enjoy it!!

  • And with freshly planted sod, you will want to water every day for about the first 2 weeks so that it will set.  Once it is settled, then you can start training it.

  • Then water in the morning? Or only if it still looks limp in the morning?

Sorry, I'm a grass moron! Embarrassed

  • Sorry to butt in - I have questions!

I'm confused about the purple haze thing.  Is this a haze that emits from the ground/grass or does the actual color of the blades appear purple?  I have to admit I've never noticed our grass do that but then I haven't really been looking for it.

How long do you water for in the morning?

  • Water in the morning until it has taken root.  Once it is established (you should be able to lightly tug a piece and feel that it is "rooted"), then you will want to start watching it and only water as needed.  In the being, it will be a lot of watering but eventually you should be able to stretch it out.

The blades will actually turn purplish.  If you are looking at your grass at an angle,  you can see the purple.  It means it is drying out but the morning due should refresh it.  Once it does not, then you will want to water.  We water for between 10-15 minutes but it really depends on how you are watering, if you are watering in sections, with a hose or sprinkler system, etc.

I am more than happy to help and can send you some other St. Augustine tips.  I *love* my St. Augustine so I am always looking for ways to make it happy grass and save my wallet!!

Thank you!  Right now I have our sprinklers set to water for 30 min at 4am MWF.  Our big problem is weeds though since we refuse to do a weed-n-feed or anything that isn't organic.  It's not a problem where the St.Aug is healthy but where it's patchy or growing more slowly (or not at all) we have a ton of weeds.  And don't even get me started on the backyard, pretty sure there is no St. Aug left back there. We're going to have to resod the back for sure one day when we have some extra money lying around (ha!).
