Salad Ideas/Poll

I'm in a salad rut - I rotate among a cranberry walnut green salad with champagne vinaigrette, a strawberry & spinach salad, and a scallion-black olive-tomato green salad with a dijon vinaigrette. So a few questions for you:

1) What's your favorite salad?

2) Do you have a favorite go-to bottled salad dressing or do you prefer to make your own?

3) Any salad recipes you'd like to share?

Re: Salad Ideas/Poll

  • 1. spinach salad with grapefruit and avocado slices.  I make my own dressing with oil, vinegar, the grapefruit juice that is left in the rind/on the cutting board and a little dijon and pepper.

    2. I usually just make an oil/vinegar combo but we usually have a creamy dressing and a premade vinegrette.  Love the Annie's naturals pomegranite lately.

  • 1) What's your favorite salad? I would have to say the pizza salad that I make.  There's a place in my hometown in Hawaii that has amazing salads but I haven't found any places like that here in Germany.  They are seriously lacking in the salad department.

    2) Do you have a favorite go-to bottled salad dressing or do you prefer to make your own? I am always looking for delicious - and healthy - salad dressings... so no, I don't have a favorite.

    3) Any salad recipes you'd like to share? The two most common salads I make are below (they aren't anything special but they are easy):
    1. LUNCH SALAD:  Lettuce, grapes, strawberries, chicken (usually the frozen chicken or veggie patties from Morning Star) and craisins... put that all together with some raspberry vinegarette.

    2. DINNER SALAD:  Lettuce, sliced olives, green pepper, turkey pepperoni with low-fat mozzerella cheese.  Mix that (you can add things like mushrooms and onions) together, put some low-fat parmesean on top if you want.  We use tomato sauce - very little - as the dressing.

Where?  I've been looking for a good salad place here!

  • 1) What's your favorite salad?  A salad I get from out local pub for takeout on Friday nights sometimes.....BBQ Ranch Chicken Salad: lettuce, black beans, corn, cucumber, tomato, avocado, chicken, onion straws, and BBQ Ranch dressing.  But that's kind of  "treat" salad for me.  When I make my own, I usually make lettuce, spinach, red onion, cucumber, pea pods, mandarin oranges, chicken or turkey, and my mom's poppy seed dressing or vinegar and oil.

    2) Do you have a favorite go-to bottled salad dressing or do you prefer to make your own? I usually use a little olive oil and 18-year balsamic vinegar (mmmmm!)  I also like to use Penzey's salad seasoning.  But I sometimes make my mom's poppy seed dressing as a treat.

    3) Any salad recipes you'd like to share?  I'll share my mom's poppy seed dressing recipe:

I will warn you that it isn't exactly a "healthy" recipe.  :)  Lots of sugar.....  But it's soooooo yummy!

    1/4 - 1/2 cups chopped onion

    1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

    2 1/2 tbsp. poppy seeds

    1 cup sugar

    1 tsp. salt

    1 tsp. dry mustard

     1 1/2 tsp paprika

    1 cup olive oil

-Combine 1st 7 ingredients in a blender of food processor.  SLowly add the oil and continue blending until thick.  Can be used as a dip, salad dressing, or marinade.

  • 2) Do you have a favorite go-to bottled salad dressing or do you prefer to make your own?  I'm not too picky, but K loves Pietro's Shoyu dressing.  It's hard to find in our area, so we have our parents send us care packages with bottles of the stuff.  It tastes great, so I don't mind inconveniencing my momma every couple months.

    3) Any salad recipes you'd like to share?  I tried this one for Chinese chicken salad the other day and thought it was good. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/chinese-chicken-salad-iii/detail.aspx

Like you, I am all about the cranberry walnut mixed greens salad with vinaigrette as well as spinach salad. If I am out, I'll usually order a Cobb Salad. J always orders caesar, usually with chicken or shrimp but we never make these salads at home.

Our go-to bottles of dressing are Ken's Chunky Bleu Cheese and Annies Naturals Goddess Dressing. We have random bottles of Caesar and Italian too.

Recently, I did make a taco salad for dinner and it was delish. Basically you put everything you would put on a taco in a salad bowl. I just used a vinaigrette dressing, but some people will use a french or tomato-based dressing for taco salads.

OK that is really funny b/c I tend to make those TWO EXACT SALADS ALL THE TIME!

I always use baby spinach or baby greens. Don't like anything else.

I just mix up the add-ins...

Fruits: Strawberries! Cubed green apples! apricots! dried cranberries! red grapes cut in half!

    Veggies: Cherry tomatoes

Nuts: Honey-roasted sliced almonds, plain sliced almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pistacios, pecans...

And sometimes I get wacky... Like just this past week I threw in some goldfish. You know, they're like croutons, right?

For dressing, I LOVE the Good Seasons salad dressing mix!!!

  • Jaime - It's called Aloha Salads.  They have delicious salads and sandwiches.  A little pricey but very fresh ingredients.  The one in Kailua opened up in early 2009.  Per their websites, they have three locations:  Kailua, Kahala Mall and Kapolei.  http://www.alohasalads.com/location-a-hours.html
