What are you reading now?...

(I need a good 'beach' book--heading to Bethany, DE this weekend!)

I just finished Slip & Fall by Nick Santora--very easy read-not too suspenseful.

Re: What are you reading now?...

  • I've enjoyed many of the Danielle Steel books. They are pretty mindless reads just about life - some are about love and learning, some about loss, and some about life changes. I would say Toxic Bachelors was my favorite of the ones I've read.

Also, Chelsea Handler's books are funny and really a fun read. Her first one was My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One Night Stands (or something very similar to that). Here 2nd book is Are you there Vodka, It's me Chelsea. I haven't gotten around to reading that yet, but I do own it.

  • I went through a Danielle Steel phase in college... wow. hadn't thought about those in... 2 decades (really, I truly mean 20 years-wow.) haven't read much of her stuff since... '90.  The other author sounds like a cute read.

  • Chronic City by Jonathan Lethem. I really like it. I don't know if I'd necessarily call it a true beach read, but it's been very enjoyable so far.

I'm not a huge fan of chick-lit usually, but if I'm going on vacation, I usually treat myself to a historical fiction novel.

  • Right now I am enjoying reading Laurell K Hamilton novels. There are about 19, and I am on #6. Easy reading, but you have to have an open mind to read these! I alos suggested The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins not too long ago... I could not put it down.
  • Oh and I just finished "The Yiddish Policemen's Union" by Michael Chabon. I really liked it, but it's a strange book.
  • I've only been reading pregnancy/childbirth/baby care books lately.

I need to get back to Kite Runner that I never finished as well as reading the sequel to the Firday Night Knitting Club (or something by the same author...my aunt said it is a good book...)

  • I just picked up Mennonite in a little black dress.  I haven't started it yet but my MIL was reading it while she was here and all I could here was her cackling over it so i have high hopes.

I also second the Chelsea Handler book Horizontal Life. I thought it was way better than her vodka book.

So far all the Laurie Notaro books that I have read I have found funny. She writes in a very self deprecating way, but funny, not in the whoa is me way.

Otherwise all my other books in the line up are WWII related or Sylvia Plath.  Apparently I want to depress the ever loving hell out of myself this summer.

  • I miss books.  Between "Your New LG Washer" and "Goodnight Moon" and the backs of medicine bottles... I have eye strain.

I hope my new train is reader-friendly.  I'm absorbing these suggestions!

  • I read nothing but horse$hit....

    seriously.

Anything by Chuck Palahniuk is ALWAYS a good sick and twisted read...seriously...dont judge me for loving his books.

I also read Running with Scissors, and looooved it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Running_with_Scissors_(memoir)

  • I'm reading Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage by Elizabeth Gilbert (author of Eat, Pray, Love...which I haven't read).  My friend recommended it to me because it takes a somewhat historical/cultural study of marriage and intertwines it with the author's personal story of deciding whether to enter a second marriage.  Since I'm a big history person she thought I'd enjoy it.  It's been very interesting so far, and I like the author's writing style a lot...she makes you feel like you're sitting down having a conversation with her, some sarcasm and side-remarks that are amusing thrown in with the narrative.

This is on my list to read.  I just finished Eat, Pray, Love (in prep for the movie coming out in Aug) and LOVED it! I'm not a big fan of reading, but I'm getting back into it.  I cannot say enough good things about it, it was fabulous!

I'm starting a new book, "Playing for Pizza" by John Grisham.  DH, the in-laws, and I are going to Italy in October, so I'm getting into the whole Italy book thing. Next after this is the series by Frances Mayes that starts with "Under the Tuscan Sun."

  • Softskate-the 2nd Knitting Club book was okay. I cried reading the first one... Loved it!

I'm into some historical fiction books... I just haven't seen anything I like lately, but may try some of the ones mentioned-or go back on Goodreads.

  • I'm a reading freak!  Lately, it seems I'm reading the books of soon-to-be movies.  My list of books read this year (and opinions) are below:

The Pilot's Wife- Anita Shreve: Good, quick read.  Somewhat suspenseful.

Dear John- Nicholas Sparks: easy read. I adore "love" stories, no matter the outcome.

The Secret History of the Pink Carnation- Lauren Willig: Started off good, but I lost interest halfway through.  Still finished it- it was just okay.

The Lucky One- Nicholas Sparks: Loved it!  I'm either all or nothing with NS, but this was the best one of his, IMO.

In a Perfect World- Laura Kasischke: A sort-of Armageddon-ish story.  Suspenseful.  One of my favorites this year.

The Last Song- Nicholas Sparks: As I mentioned above, I'm all or nothing with NS. This was a nothing to me.

Olive Kitteridge- Elizabeth Strout: Surprisingly good. My boss read it and wasn't too positive about it, but it's interesting.

The Time Traveler's Wife- Audrey Niffenegger: Good read, but would recommend watching the movie first (which is something I typically NEVER do)

sTori Telling and Mommyhood- Tori Spelling: I wanted a couple quick reads and I love her show, so I got these two from the library and finished both in about a week's time.  Nothing special.

Currently reading Reading Lolita in Tehran- Azar Nafisi: after reading all the "fluff" I've read so far this year, this one is taking me a while to get through. It's good - not in the "I can't wait to read what happens next" sense; more in the sense of learning and understanding.
