So I have somewhat of a dilemna, Simba has been throwing up quite a bit recently. It happens during the day when I am not at wk. During the day, I leave out dry food for him and Buster. At night, the dry food is left out and they get a half of can of wet food to share. He never throws up after that. So I am kinda stumped. My aunt said he might have tape worm or something that is bothering him and I could just get something from the vet for it? What is everyone's idea or opinions? He does it for a few days and then not for a week or so then every day, etc. I don't get it and am sick of cleaning up the puke.
Re: Cat Question
IDK, my cat has always been a puker. It's worse when she eats too fast - but that doesn't sound like your problem.
Is he puking up food, or just stomach bile?
My cat is a bit of a puker, too. I would say every couple of weeks or so, maybe once a month. Sometimes it is food (usually only if I've switched to a new brand), bile, or a hairball.
I would mention it to your vet the next time you take Simba in and see what they have to say.
My first thought is that it's hairball related. Does Simba have longish hair?
My second question would be whether you are consistent with the brand and formula of food you feed. Some cats have more sensitive stomachs. My cat will puke for a couple of days if I change her food at all.
Luckily, its pretty rare for my cats to vomit. They do occassionally though, and I mentioned it to the vet once and he basically said that some cats just vomit from time to time and its not anything to be concerned about.
It sounds like maybe Simba is getting sick more that he should be though. What if you called your vet's office, explained the situation, and asked what they recommended? They might tell you to try a different kind of dry food, but introduce the new food slowly (mix it with the old food at first). He may have some sort of allergy to the current dry food.
Good luck! Cleaning up puke isn't fun.
I have one cat that pukes a lot and one that rarely does.
We have done a few things to keep her from puking as much.
1) Put golf balls in the food dishes. This kept her from eating to fast which prevents her from puking right after eating. We found that when she ate to fast she would puke near the food dish. You can also tell by how digested to food is. I can tell its the food that she is eating because it isn't fully digested and is the shape and color that is similar to what I feed them.
2) Changed to an expensive hairball food. There was a food sample that our vet gave us that is a perscription food. We haven't switched to the RX food, but instead a Science Diet formula that is similar to the RX stuff.
3) Hair ball control. Now that we've addressed her puking as a result of how and what she was eating most of her pukes include a lot of hair. Which is a little strange because she is a short haired cat...if we give her hairball gell stuff and comb her regularly the puking slows down.
I would encourage you to look at the contents of the puke to see if it looks like its a hairball problem. If it is, I wouldn't worry about it. If it isn't a hairy puke I would consider calling the vet and see if they have any suggestions.
When we took our puker into the vet they checked to make sure she didn't have an infection by doing simple things like urine test, checking temperature etc. We opted not to do any advanced tests because even if we did diagnose it there may not be much that can be done to fix it.
Sorry that got so long.
Thanks for the suggestions. I called the vet and they said to keep him on the Purina Sensitive Stomach for for another week and then call them if it hasn't gotten better.
I think I will try the golf ball thing for while I am going during the day and see if that helps.
His vomit looks like the dry food just wet & swelled or all in a nasty gergitation that digested but came back up.
