My H and I are looking to vacation in Vancouver for 5-6 days in August. Any advice/recs? Has anyone stayed at the Aviawest (868 Hamilton St) before? Will we need to rent a car? Any other recs on what to do, places to eat, etc? TIA!
Re: Another Vancouver Vaca Q
You really should go to Granville Market. Just ask the people at the front desk how to get there, transit is super easy to follow. The market is AMAZING! Delicous food, funky atmosphere. Take a AquaBus on the way back, fun cheap boat ride.
You should check out Gas town as well. Good eats and right on the ocean.
Check out Stanley Park, walk the loop. Its really beautiful.
I have never stayed at that hotel. When we go we always stay at the YWCA hotel as its super cheap, clean and in a fabulous location. The staff are very helpful and pleasant.
Hm, I think the Aviawest timeshare is the one that's in the hotel? If it is, DH and I stayed in a one bedroom when we first moved here... the rooms are nice (but small in timeshare world, kwim?)... they have a living room, bedroom, and little kitchenette in the living room with a stove and small fridge... pretty much like a suite hotel room. It's on the edge of Yaletown, which is where all the trendy young people are and some of the fancy pants restaurants.
Vancouver has really great public transportation. You could probably walk most places downtown, but I would take the public transit to go to Stanley Park (which is on the other side of downtown and then you would have energy to walk around it and the seawall) and Granville Island (across the bridge). I have walked to Robson St (the part of Robson St that has all the shopping and the mall) and that's about 15 minutes from the hotel. Oh and Olympic cauldron is also downtown. I would get a car if you want to go Capilano Suspension Bridge or Grouse Mountain... I think it would just be easier.
You should definitely have poutine somewhere. Fritz European Fry House on Davie (at Granville, I think?) has yummy poutine... as does Costco! Vancouver has a ton of Japanese restaurants too and the pieces of fish are huge. Japadog is also very popular here.
Have fun!
