XP: Jamaica Questions

For those that have been I have a few questions. We haven't decided on a resort yet but here are 2 big things that are factors.

1. I have heard the drive from the airport to Negril is about 2 hours. Is it a bad drive? We will have Austin with us and I am a little worried about the drive after having to sit on a plane.

2. How is the food at the AI resorts? My FIL is extremely picky when it comes to food. He hated the food when we went to Cancun and the DR.

TIA

Re: XP: Jamaica Questions

  • I've never stayed in Negril but have rode from Montego Bay several times. It's about 2 hours and although the roads were much better in November than our previous trips, they are not good. They are bumpy and narrow. Jamaicans drive like crazy people. If you think people tailgate on the beltway - you haven't seen anything yet. Personally, I like to stay in Montego Bay because after flying I want to get to the resort as fast as possible. No matter where you stay, book private transportation so you don't have to stop at various resorts to drop others off. Clives is great and reliable. As far as food, each AI is different. I've been to 3 in Jamaica and have always been pleased with the selection but both of the ones I've stayed at in the Bahamas were gross. So jealous of you right now!

Where did you stay? Which would you recommend?

  • We got married at the Grand Palladium and loved it. It's beautiful and has at least 5 restaurants plus buffets and a jerk hut on site. I've also stayed at the Hilton Rose Hall and liked it but that was 15 years ago. A couple of years ago we stayed at The Sunspree. We were looking for a cheap vacation and loved it for the price. It has a lot less food options and amenities. DH and I are pretty low maintenance travelers. If there's a beach, a bar and a clean room we're happy.

The drive really wasn't bad, took about an hour and a half. I thought the food at Sandals was great, especially for an AI. Assuming Beaches would be the same too.

  • One more question. Did you ever leave the resort?? If so did you feel safe. I have read many reviews that said Montego Bay is not the safest place to explore. There are lots of drugs and prostitutes around.

Yep.  I've been to Ocho Rios, "The Hip Strip" (Montego Bay) and Negril.  The Grand Palladium is actually in Lucea (about 40 min from Montego Bay).  I've always felt safe and have never seen a prostitute or didn't realize it.  Just be smart about where/when you leave the resort.  There is marijuana pretty much every where.  You won't necessarily see it but you'll smell it.  If you want to do a lot of strolling around, Negril is probably a better place for you.  The resorts in Montego Bay are more spread out and you'll have to take a cab anywhere you want to go.

  • Thank you so much for all the information.

  • The drive is only about an hour and a half from what I remember.  It was a little crazy but I actually really enjoyed it.  Just try to get to do it during the day so you can see stuff.  Some of Rocky's family members had to do the drive at night and missed out on everything.

I thought the food at Beaches Sandy Bay was good (selection was a little small though) and the food at Sandals Negril was really good!  I thought Beaches Negril's food was really good until half of our guests wound up with food poisoning from our dinner there and they got REALLY sick from it (my nephew had to go to the ER for fluids) so after that we didn't go back again.  But I didn't get sick and neither did Rocky or 4 other guests that had dinner with us that night so I'm sure that was an isolated incident. Just use caution when having the salad dressing at the TexMex place!  :)

  • when we drove to YS Falls it took about an hour and half.  i was not a fan.  we past by the whitehouse (which we where thinking of staying) and i was SO glad we chose MB!  if you do go to negril, i would think about get a private car.  it was nice just to have the van with us and our friends, but i would of not been a happy camper with strangers.

the food was AMAZING at our place and i am thinking, that beaches will be just as great.

we never felt not safe when we left the resort.  we left it almost all the days, but once.  we never saw any hookers, maybe we did, and just did not know, and we only got ask 2 to buy pot and when jake said no, they where cool with that.
