This had better be our forever house (mini-vent)

DH is driving me crazy with his frustrations over the mortgage application process... I get that they ask for a lot of documentation, and yes it's annoying, is it really that bad?? But then again, all I do is read and sign the forms he hands me, he's the one on the phone several times a day with various people, so maybe I don't understand bigger picture of his frustration.

In any case, we had planned to be in this house for a good long while...and now I'm hoping it's a permanent move. I don't want to deal with all this mess again! (-=

Re: This had better be our forever house (mini-vent)

  • The paperwork for the underwriters is a giant PITA! I was a single woman when I bought my first home and I had to dedicate hours to hunting down, faxing, following up, explaining, refaxing, all the crap the underwriter needed for the loan. Honestly my work started to suffer during those couple of weeks because I was always on the phone with someone or hunting down some documentation. And of course it all has to be done uber-quickly because you need to close within a certain timeframe. I was dealing with a 30-day closing. It really is a huge pain. Cut your H some slack, all the crap he's doing really is a headache.

Of course that didn't stop me from buying another house again. It's like labor, the memory of the pain starts to fade in time...until you're in the thick of it again.

  • I didn't think it was that bad, but I am a bit of a documentation hoarder.  I have gotten better, but at one point I had every single pay stub from all of my jobs since I was 13, all in a filing cabinet labeled by company.

When we applied this last time it was rather frustrating to provide everything they told me to then get a call a few days later saying they needed more, then same thing a few more days later.  Requirements were changing as I was trying to get pre-approved and it was really annoying me.

Overall I don't think it was so bad that I wouldn't want to do it again.  Once you've done it you kind of know what to expect and just realize it is all part of the process.

    Good luck!

  • I totally feel your pain.  You wouldn't believe all the hoops we had to jump through to get our house.  You might as well sell your first born child!  And now, we're continuing to jump through hoops as we wait (nearly a year now!) for our first time home buyers credit to come from the Government.
