dinner in athens

dh and i have to go to a funeral in athens tomorrow. we will get out around dinner time and would like to have dinner. any suggestions???

Re: dinner in athens

  • my absolute favorite japanese restaurant is in Athens, Inoko.  It's on Alps Road on the same side as Chilis.

Some of my faves Downtown are East West Bistro, Harry Bissetts, and DePalmas.

  • Last Resort is my all-around fave in Athens but Mirko is always my first stop when I get into town. I like the Oconee location best but there's one on the east side (and maybe Baxter street?) too.
  • Last Resort or Five & Ten. Five & Ten is amazing!

  • what kind of food do these places serve?

my dh was talking about some kind of diner...he said espn goes there on game days???

i know nothing about athens - only been there twice.

  • Mirko is homemade pasta and is incredible ( and relatively cheap - I think it is related to a restaurant in Atlanta but I don't know the name). Last Resort is downtown and has a pretty big variety (but the chicken praline is TO DIE FOR and the shrimp n' grits are awesome too) with a really cool, downtown-Athens-esque vibe. I think they both gave websites with menus. Harry B's is Cajun but I think the downtown location closed. And no offense but I think Inoko is just okay. It's your basic Japanese hibatchi but I always feel like I am paying more for the entertainment than the food. Weaver D's is what Game Day always goes to in Athens but I am not a fan. Weaver is a doucebag and it's really overpriced because if all the hype. If you want good, greasy southern food, my favorite is Peaches on Broad St. I'm not sure I'd want to eat like that and then sit in a car for an hour though...
  • Ugh I don't know why all the paragraphs ran together like that. Sorry!
  • Last resort (get dessert) or farm 255 (all local organic fresh) or the national( better than five and ten imo)

I haven't been to the National yet, but so want to go!!

  • I'm so sorry that you have to come to Athens for a funeral, and it's raining like crazy.

The only diner I can think of is The Grill, it's on College, off of Broad St. I don't know if it's the kind of place you're looking for.

My favorite place is Last Resort (agreed with pp, definitely get dessert), and I second East West Bistro. Harry Bissetts is no longer open because they haven't paid their taxes. Five and Ten is also really great but has a limited menu because it's all seasonal food, and there's a great place in five points beside Five and Ten called The Royal Peasant, which is the best English Pub food I've had in the US.

  • Ps peaches also closed. Pps weaver ds is also famous bc REM used their motto (automatic for the people) as an album title. That is all. For now.:-)

  • i am OBSESSED with transmetropolitan.  their blackened chicken panini is to die for.

and i think espn goes to the varsity sometimes...

  • I love the last resort, it's the place I always go in athens. I had my RD there. I  have always wanted to go to Farm255.

A yummy burger joint called Clocked is good, it's on West Clayton.

the last time they did taste of the town in Athens was at weaver D's, but the regular espn announcing crew might eat somewhere else.
