Hi everyone, we planted Stella d'oro in one of our beds in Spring 2008 and the leaves have significantly bulked up since last year. I've noticed that none of the stems are growing very high (the tallest are only about 6" off the ground) and the flowers are being hidden by the leaves.
I was planning on separating the plants this fall...but I'm wondering if this problem is being caused because they need split right now. We've had an unseasonably warm spring (90 degrees one weekend in early April) and it is still early in the season, could it just be those factors and not that they're too big?
Thank you for any help or experience you have!
Re: Stella d'oro Daylilies too short
It could be one of two problems (or a combination of both)--not enough sunlight or not enough water. Daylilies are very resourceful plants; if they're not getting enough of any resource, they'll improvise by putting out less blooms and growing shorter flower stalks; it helps them conserve.
You can get a sunlight meter--there is a cheap, but effective type called "Sun Sticks" available via their website or, most likely, eBay. Daylilies will tolerate partial-shade, but they are most definitely a full sun pant. So, not enough light could definitely be the problem.
Secondly, they might not be getting enough water. If their area has really good drainage, the water might be running off too quickly for their roots to absorb it, or you might not have gotten enough rain yet this year, or you might need to water them in the evenings, so they get an extra dose.
Are you using fertilizer, by chance? Particularly a high nitrogen fertilizer, such as Miracle Grow? Or do you use lawn fertilizer NEAR these?
I don't think it's related to sunlight or water, but may have something to do with the crowding you describe or nitrogen levels.
Thank you ladies for all the suggestions. In the last week we have had a few new stems shoot up that are the normal height.
We haven't used fertilizer in the area since they seemed to be growing well we just left them alone, but it probably could use it since you mention it.
The area isn't getting as much sunlight as it has in years past. Our neighbors have a rose that grows between the chain link fence that is behind the daylily bed and I got tired of cutting it back so often so I wove its branches through the fence and created a nice privacy hedge. They are still getting atleast 6 hours of sunlight though, so hopefully that's not the whole problem.
I think we'll divide them up the next chance we get, the gold dust alysum that we have planted with them are done blooming, so it'll be a good time to cut those back too, it's just hard to get in there to work since it's so crowded and the bed is elevated about 3.5'.
