Graduation Gift for a high school graduate?

I just saw this on an infomercial.

It intrigued me and I was thinking about it for this girl I know who is graduating hs and is off to college. (I started babysitting her when she was 6 years old!) It's a way for her to cook in her dorm room and isn't the usually gift of money. What do you think? Silly idea?

Although I like the idea, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been allowed to have one of those in my dorm room.  :(

What about giftcards for S'bucks, a grocery store, an all-night restaurant?

  • That is cute, but most dorms probably will not let her use it.

I am with Carrie I probably get her a gift card to starbucks or food card

  • I like the idea..but agree with the others.  I haven't heard of a college that allows George Formans (which I would think it similar in cooking styles) some are even banning microwaves (younger sister's university doesn't allow personal microwaves)

What about a monogrammed tote bag to carry books.  A lot of freshman just start with book bags and then transition to something more sophisticated later on

I agree with everyone else, and the dorm probably wont allow it anyway.

I like the idea of a monogram tote bag, or just go with a GC or cash.

  • it's a great idea! i love my george foreman grill.. but like the others said - would it be permissible in a dorm?? i never lived in one, so i dont know.

one of the best/most thoughtful gifts i remember getting for HS graduation was one of those hanging shoe organizer things that you can hang in a closet (there are some really cute ones out there!) and all the compartments were filled with things for college life and random stuff. you could also use a laundry basket to hold all the items.

some ideas include: quarters for doing laundry, college memorabilia stuff, basic cleaning supplies, junk food, vitamins, can opener, a book about handling money, fabric softener sheets, soap, stress ball, gum, cocoa packets, first aid kit, pens/pencils, stapler and other supplies, ID holder, USB flash drive, something monogrammed (like towels or washcloths), batteries, address book, flip flops for the shower.

Heck, go to the dollar store and fill 'er up! $20-$30 can get you a LOT! I know sometimes it's hard to give a gift card or $ because you dont want to seem cheap and/or you want them to think you spent more on them - this is an easy way out b/c you can make the "college survival kit" as expensive as you want it to be. it will all be consumed or used eventually so I think it's a win-win.

Thanks, I like the survival kit idea.  I need to check on her dorm policies. Mine would have allowed it, so that's why it might not be a problem.

  • I love it! We were allowed to have George Foreman grills....my bff and I lived on grilled cheese and hamburgers. lol
