How would you handle this?

As I said earlier the interview went well but they are not offering near enough money for the work they want done.  They called for a second interview this morning and I know I'm not going to take the job.  I could make a lot more on unemployment than if I took that job.  She left me a message to call back and schedule another interview.  I don't want to waste their time so how would you approach the situation?

Re: How would you handle this?

  • I would call back and say something along the lines of:

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to interview with you.  After sitting through the intitial interview and hearing about the job requirments and pay scale, I don't think I will be a good fit for the company.

Ultimately, I would tell them the truth that the pay is lower than you expected and you feel that your skill set and their pay scale do not match up.

Agreed...this is exactly what I suggest saying. And definitely be honest with them.

  • I want to be upfront for sure because I don't want to waste time of theirs or mine.  They are such nice people and like I said if it was close I'd consider because I believe in their organization and what they are doing.

This.  And by being honest about the pay there's a chance they'll negotiate with you a bit

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

Then be sure to mention that about believing intheir organization and what they are doing. I wouldn't say that they need to just be close to your current salary...be sure to start higher then you'd like to make if they ask you for a figure.
