what are you Charleston favorites - dining & sight seeing

i'm taking my parents to Charleston next week. we're only staying over one night. i've been there several times, but i always do the same stuff and go to the same places. my parents, however, have never been. so i'd like to mix it up with some new things for me.

i will definitely do the carriage tour with them since its their first time.

  • Always a carriage tour. That never gets old, even though I could tell the tour myself. Eat at Cru Cafe, have a drink on the rooftop at the Vendue Inn, go to the Cupcake bakery. Waterfront Park is always nice also. There is a new Cooper River Park also across the bridge. It was ok.
  • If they're only there one night, you have to do Hyman's Seafood - it's a must-do for any visitors. My parents loved Patriot's Point - influenced probably by Dad being a veteran.

Also going to visit Fort Sumter is also a neat experience, walking down Rainbow Road, 82nd Queens is a great resturant, SNOB is also a good one...

I am allergic to seafood, but I've heard that Hymans is one of the best seafood restaurants there. They had somebody handing out samples of their hushpuppies once and they were amazing.

  • the cupcake shop on King Street it is literally called cupcake I believe. they are delish! We always walk up to the pier and down rainbow row see the boats and such. Take a drive out to the beach that would be fun if you are staying over. The market is always fun too. I always get some nice things when I am there. I got a great piece of pottery when I was there last time.

I just saw an Anthony Bourdaine about Charleston and oysters that are fresh they go out and catch them and literally cook them right on the back docks. I could not tell you the name but it looked fantastic if you like seafood! love Charleston have fun!!!

  • We went on a ghost tour of the old city jail....it was really fun!
