How do you respond to that...?

This may be long so I apologize in advance.

There is this guy that DH knows, we?ll call him J. Well J paid DH to put an engine in his race car and get it running and relocate the battery.(the battery has to be relocated for the engine to fit). Anyways, J had taken the front cover off the engine and resealed it before he brought it to DH. DH could tell it wasn?t sealed with the correct sealer so DH asked J if he wanted DH to take it off and reseal it with the correct stuff. J said no. First thing DH found was J?s turbo was bad. J got another one, Second DH found J?s water pump was wrong for this type of engine swap DH gave J another one. For the swap you have to get new clutch lines. DH gave these to J, well J took them off one of our parts cars without even asking along with other numerous parts. During this whole time J was trying to help DH. He was more of a hindrance than help, but DH was gonna let him help. So J would call DH and say can we work on the car today(on a week day) even thought DH has been working on cars all day, he says sure. Well DH goes up there when we get home at around 5:30, J doesn?t get up there till about 7:00 and wants to work till 3:00 in the morning, and gets irritated at DH, well actually me, because DH leaves at 10:30 or 11:00. He gets irritated at me because I call up there wondering when DH will be home cause I know DH needs his sleep, and I know DH is wanting to come home so I try to give him an excuse?.i.e. ?My wife said I needed to get home.?

Well when the time was getting closer to the race DH and J fired up the car and drove it down the road. Well J freaks out because the cover that J put on was leaking, not that bad actually, I?ve seen worse leaks at the races. So J decides it is not raceable. This is where I knew something was going on. I just felt it in my gut. I told DH to hurry up and do the battery relocation and send J on his way. Well we don?t hear from J for almost a month(this whole time J?s car is in DH?s shop), then Friday J calls DH and says ?hey can we work on the car tonight?. DH says no I?m taking Sierra out, we haven?t been out in a while. Well J calls again while we?re eating and asks DH if he wants to come hang out at J and his buddies popular hangout place. DH says yeah we might swing by. So at 9:00 we go by said popular hangout, no one is there. DH calls J and asks where he?s at. J says he almost there. So we wait. J shows up and DH gets out and talks with J and the other guys there. I stayed in the car because I really don?t like the potty mouths on some of those guys, plus I didn?t want to intrude on DH?s guy time. J leans over and says ?What?s wrong with you.? I say nothing, which was the truth. So I snoozed in the car. Which was fine with me I needed the nap.

Well here?s where it gets interesting.
And if you?ve made it this far I commend you.
Saturday DH gets a text well actually 3 or 4. It took that many. I can?t give you the actual word for word but I will just give you the high points.

First off he tells DH what he paid him to do, which is exactly what I have stated before the swap and the battery relocation. Then he goes on to tell DH that ?He doesn?t want to sound like an a**, but he paid him to do these things to his car and time wasn?t a requirement but this is just been too long.? Then he goes on to say that all that stuff DH has given him ?doesn?t matter? J?s exact words. That he knows DH is busy moving and all but his car should be top priority and that, and I quote, ?Sierra shouldn?t get in the way of you finishing my car?. I was livid. Then he says ?I?m really not being ungrateful.? There were other things said but I can?t remember it word for word. DH said J pretty much slap him in the face then said thanks man now fix my mess for free. Needless to say DH was upset, hurt and mad. My blood pressure was so high, it was boiling, I had a killer headache the rest of the day.

Well DH did not respond, he really didn?t know how to. Later that day J sent another one that said ?Are you mad?? DH did not respond. I told DH he needs to go up there relocate the battery, put all of J?s stuff in his car, move it out side of the shop and tell J to come get it.

The thing is though, DH has been on a forum for drifting(it shows the events, when and where they are and all that) for a while now, like 5 years, and he just doesn?t want J, who is also on there, to start talking about him and give him a bad name. Because DH buys and sell parts with those other guys too. I don?t think they will think bad of DH because J is already being an a** on there too. DH just doesn?t know what to do and I don?t either because I feel like I?ve caused this, by trying to keep DH from wearing himself out working all those late nights.

Any advise, tips, or thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanks ladies!

Re: How do you respond to that...?

  • Holy Cow!
Sounds like DH needs to definitely separate from this guy.  If J badmouths him on that forum-he just needs to say-if you want to know the story, come see me, talk to me, etc, but I don't believe in bad mouthing or airing stuff like this on forums.  The guys there-if they know your DH well enough and see this J guy is a jerk-will know what the truth is...

That just stinks and I'm sorry!

  • I would finish the battery thing, move the car out, tell J to pick it up, AND give J a revised bill for the extra time, materials, and re-do's of J's crappy work.  Even if he doesn't pay the extra bill - he might at least see that the original scope of work was NOT this big and your DH has put way more into the car than he was lead to believe that it needed.

Your DH is being taken advantage of and it isn't right.

My dad used to do side mechanic work when I was little and it annoyed my mom to no end b/c everyone wanted a deal/freebie and my dad did the side work b/c we actually needed the money...it wasn't just for fun.

This is exactly what I told DH.

And DH gets the same thing as your dad. People what him to tell them whats wrong, for free, so they can fix it. Very annoying.
He always says "Doctors check ups aren't free so why should mechanic "check ups" be free?" That always get the people thinking.

I agree with Softskate, and with what Lori said too about the forums. If J wants to treat it like  business transaction, your DH should do that too, and charge him for all those extras.
