PIP-help with window treatment

What color drapes would you do? I found velvet taupe colored ones, but they are really close to the wall color. Would you try to match the red or do you think that it would be too much red? My third choice was chocolate brown. I know you can't see the windows in this picture, but there are two windows just outside of the frame on both sides of this picture.

ETA: I couldn't get the stupid PIP to work- click here

Re: PIP-help with window treatment

  • It depends what look you are going for, I personally like when the curtains and walls match or close in color becuase I love monochromatic rooms, with accents like pillows, or a lamp as pop of color. It make the room look more expensive if you choose heavy fabrics like the velvet you mentioned. But I would change the bedding.
  • I would agree with pp about changing the bedding.  You have very contrasting fabrics going on that don't really seem to go together (quilt [folksy, handmade, lightweight fabrics] and heavy, jewel-toned velvet --  or at least it looks like velvet [richer, more sophisticated, heavy, lush]).  So, personally, I would choose a look and go from there.

If you keep the quilt, I would change out the dust ruffle and pillows (not keeping the big, red ones) and pick out your favorite color from the quilt for the drapes.  It's hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like there might be some sage green or cream in there; that would give the room a nice, relaxing feeling.  Picking up the red would give it a bolder, more vibrant feel.  I don't see chocolate brown going at all, and taupe, maybe.

Good luck and post a picture!

  • I agree with the pp that if you're keeping the quilt that velvet in any color is too heavy and formal. I' stick with a more casual fabric and a shade or so lighter than the wall color. Add in some more pillows that bridge the gap between the wall color and the red shams.

  • Really? I like the quilt; it was originally in a guest bedroom at my mom's house and she bought the velvet dust ruffle to go with it. I do have a green corduroy one that I could swap. I was worried the red would be too much though.

Where would you suggest looking? I looked at Target, but they didn't seem to have much. BB&B seemed to have the most, but that's where I found the velvet taupe ones.

  • Have you checked tjmaxx, marshalls or ross?
  • Ah yes, TJ Maxx. They didn't have much. But I need to try Marshalls and Ross. Maybe I'll have better luck there.
  • Cost Plus World Market is where I have picked up most of my curtains. They have a surprisingly good selection!
  • Do you have a sewing machine? I have been making my own and have been really happy. It is pretty easy to make panels. I bought fabric from fabric.com.

I don't dislike the quilt at all.  In fact I think it's really pretty!  What kind of material is the quilt?  I was guessing it was cotton and more along the lines of country-chic so that along with velvet was kind of a disconnect for me.  I guess I was saying to take into account the style of the fabrics, not just the colors.
