Are you kidding me?!

I just had Mike call Geico to get a homeowners insurance quote - they wanted about $180/month on top of the $194/month for our cars.  I flipped...my friend down the street, in the same exact floor plan is paying just over $200/mo for her house AND cars through Allstate.

And get this...it's b/c Chloe is a "pitbull."  Clo is a mutt...she's probably even got some cat in her somehow.  Damn Mike for answering questions he's not 100% sure on.

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

  • Yuck... that's crazy.  I was going to suggest American Family, whom we have and have stuck with ONLY because they're so reasonable.  Unfortunately, we were told by them if we got a pitbull (or any mix including pitbull, Chow, wolf, Rottweiler, and a few other breeds) they'd have to drop our liability.
  • I have Erie.  Don't know if it's available there though (I think it may be an east coast agency).  We don't pay near that.  And we have 3 cars and two houses.

  • I don't know about the dog thing - but we got about 4 quotes for homeowners when were buying our house and GEICO was the most expensive - we already had them for our auto (hubs being in the military we used to get a huge discount from them) but even with the auto discount they were the most expensive, so we switched to Nationwide for both home and auto and saved a lot. I've had great customer service w/ Nationwide, with the girl who hit my car - they didn't give me any issues and they went after her for our deductible, I would def. recommend them.
  • That is nuts, I would for sure call around.

  • Try to find an agent who can shop around for quotes for you (independent agent rather than one who has to sell you Nationwide or Allstate or one of the others).  They can usually get better deals, although sometimes it's best to go with one of the big ones.

I have a call into the guy who did our condo insurance and that's how he works, but I'm working with a State Farm guy and am blown away by his quote.  Without our cars - $487 per year.  Gieco WITH our cars - $1,381 for home + $2400 for cars per year.  He's running the cars now.

  • I've always heard Geiko is more expensive for home insurance. Our home, 2 cars, and my jewelry rider cost us $200 per month. Definitely call around to see what you can find!

Wow! I'm sorry to hear the insurance prices are so high there! But you do make up for it with a LCOL area :)

  • We actually have Geico for our cars (we have 3 cars and pay $150 a month).  But they were very high for home owners.  So we have AllState for our homeowners.  Like a pp suggested, I would have an independent agent search for the cheapest quote.

  • We're going with Allsate...it's only $15 more per month to have both the cars and the house through them.

  • I've heard the pitbull thing before.  I knew there were other breeds as well but wasn't sure.  They say you should always check your insurance rates every 3 years just to make sure you are getting the best rate.
