I have never posted here before, so hello! My family is looking to relocate, and we have added Shrewsbury to our list of options. If anybody could give any information, like schools, what areas are not so good, and anything else would be appreciated. TIA!
Re: Shrewsbury
Hi there!
I grew up in nearby Westborough (also a great town, but more expensive). Shrewsbury is nice, very good schools, and more reasonable house prices. I don't know much about areas of the town to avoid, but my general knowledge is that it's a nice town
Good luck!
I don't know too much about the town. It is sandwiched between Worcester and the boros (North-, West-). I would imagine the boro sides of Shrewsbury are probably pretty nice. The school ratings on greatschools.com are really good. You can also check out mass.gov for test scores, etc.
Also, welcome! Feel free to post. What other towns are you looking in?
We would like to stay where we are (Acton), but it's just so expensive. But, we are looking into the boros as well. His business is in Hudson, so we don't want to go too far from there, and we want to go to a good school system, since we have a 9 year old and a baby.
The boros probably won't be much more affordable than Acton (Northboro may be your best bet). And I'd stay away from Marlborough if you're looking for good schools, they aren't great there.
Grafton is up and coming, but kind of the wrong direction from Hudson.
Ditto MrsT about Marlborough, and same for Hudson. I don't think their school systems are very good.
My suggestion would be Littleton and Westford. Great school systems but the houses are more affordable than Acton and Boxborough.
I don't know much about the towns west along 495 unfortunately.
Welcome! I live in Worcester, but I wish I lived in Shrewsbury- there were just no houses that were right for us when we were looking.
Shrewsbury schools are good, according to my coworker. Her son just transferred to Shrewsbury High from a private high school and is much happier there. Coworker speaks highly of the middle school, and since her kids were long out of elementary school by the time I met her, I can only assume they're as good.
I think all of Shrewsbury's pretty nice. DH and I saw some run-down neighborhoods on the Worcester side, north of route 9, but the rest of the town seems nice. I love the downtown area, it feels like a small New England town.
As for commuting, I'd try to make it so I didn't have to go on route 9 during rush hour. It's actually really annoying at any time of day, there are so many traffic lights and stores that it's impossible to get through. Once you get into Westborough or Worcester it's not (as) bad. Westborough has very good schools, but I think is much more expensive than Shrewsbury (my boss lives there, and her 18 year old son works for us part time in the summer, so I get info from them).
