South Austin Gyms?

I am looking for a gym in south Austin.  I recently took a kickboxing class w/ a personal trainer for Pure and she recommended trying each gym that was close by for one week.  So far I only have Golds, Premier and 24-F.  Do you go to these? Have other recs? I am keeping Lifetime at the bottom of the list bc I heard the classes get full during peak times, which is when I'd be going. Also, the Y is farther that I want to drive.

All I'm looking for is fun classes.  I don't care about machines, etc.

Re: South Austin Gyms?

  • You can find the class schedule for 24hrF online. It really depends on the instructor. I have never been to any of the S locations, but in N, Hancock and Arboretum, if the instructor is good the class will be very crowded!!

  • Ditto tx bride on classes, the good ones at south 24hr do fill up but usually not to the point where it makes me want to leave.

There used to be a great kickboxing instructor south but he is only North now.. and they have switched so many around I havent tried the kickboxing lately.  The lift classes are awesome and the step instructor in the evenings can be hard core... but after a few rounds I got the hang of it.

If you have any other questions Id be happy to answer them!

  • I live in South Austin too. :)

I was a member of the YMCA for about a year. The gym is OK. It is usually pretty clean and they have lots of machines, a huge indoor pool and tons of classes. They also have free childcare if that is something you need.

Recently, I switched to the South Austin Gym in the Alamo parking lot. It is pretty ghetto fab, but it is only a few blocks from my office and at $100 a year it is hard to go wrong.

They don't have classes though, right?

  • I go to Premier Lady at Westgate/William Cannon.

I was super intimidated by all the people at 24 hour, their machines were always broken, the bathroom is always disgusting, and if you want to take a class - you better be really skilled and be ready to do it in a giant glass box in front of the whole gym. Also, in the 9 months I was a member, the police were there 3 times.

I went to Gold's across the street all through high school. Liked it at the time.

I love Premier Lady. It's not as fancy as the others, but I like it. It's all women, the classes have women at all levels of expertise participating. It's the only gym I've even been comfortable taking classes, though, so I might be biased :-) Everyone is very friendly. I admit, I mostly like it for the atmosphere. The machines are never full, but sometimes the more popular classes fill up, but not always.

  • I have never been to this one, but I have liked other Lifetime Fitnesses in other states. They are all pretty similar in style and layout. I know that there is one on William Cannon.

I currently go to Pure and really like it.

The trainer I worked with was from Pure.  I think that gym would be perfect, but it isn't convenient enough for me to go frequently.
