Need PC laptop recommendation

Our PC is dying.  We have a MacBook which we love, but DH needs a PC for a certain program that won't run on a Mac.  The dying one is a Dell Inspiron and we were not impressed with it.  Any recommendations?  Budget wise, trying to stay under $750.

Re: Need PC laptop recommendation

  • I can't help with any suggestions but I think you should be able to find a a resonable laptop for under $700. Would the program that your Dh needs to run work if you were able to boot a mac as a PC? I know you can make a mac boot as a windows machine and there are also programs that will let you run windows OS virtualy on the mac too.

Yes that would work, but the cost of buying a second macbook and all the stuff to boot it as a PC is high. Plus why buy a mac if we are just going to use it like a PC, you know?

  • I was going to recomend the Dell...It's the brand that I've had the best luck with.  DH and my sister have HP laptops that are a few years old.  They are both very happy with theirs.

Totally get you on that. I guess the only thing I can think of is also check craigslist for computers. I have found some good finds on there.
  • DH has a Toshiba Satellite that he loves. He's had it for about a year and so far he hasn't had any issues. We both previously had Dells that we didn't like.
  • Dells are AWFUL.  I wish people would stop buying that crap so Dell would just go out of business already.  Stick out tongue

I have an HP which I really like, but I have heard that HP is notorious for having bad motherboards.  My motherboard went bad about 6 weeks before the warranty was up.  I would have been livid if it went bad after.  It would have cost about $450 to have it replaced, and I only paid about $650 for the computer itself.

Before my HP I had an Acer which I loved (and still do.)  It still runs pretty great and I've had it for 6.5 years.

  • We have a Toshiba Satellite that we have been really impressed with.  It was also rated really well by Consumer reports.

  • I have a HP that I love! My husband just bought an Asus. So far he likes it. Oh. Ben just told me there's a laptop on Newegg.com that's $600 after rebates. It's a HP Pavilion Model number DV6-2150US. (Yeah, he's done a lot of computer research lately. LOL!) He said that there's a few others on there that are reasonably priced depending on what you need.

  • Thank you so much for all this advice!  I also asked this question on FB and got similar responses: bad reviews for Dell, great reviews for HP and a few good comments about Acer.

I'm going to do some more research on HP and Acer.

    THANKS!

  • I loved my Dell laptop. The H buys Dells for his work ALL the time. He has a different point of view b/c he gets a corporate customer service number and gets right through to an English speaking tech support person. I'd buy Dell over HP, but my mom has gotten some TERRIBLE HPs.

I have an Asus Eee PC netbook. We bought an extra 1GB of RAM and an external DVD-ROM. It's 3lbs of awesomeness.

Have fun with the new computer!
