AW: Block Party Success

I just have to share because despite some horrible weather Saturday night, we (me and another neighbor) were about to pull off our HOA block party.  We went through 4 kegs, 24 boxes of Bojangles chicken and had a great time.  There were tons of games for kids (egg race, egg toss, sidewalk chalk art contest, cupcake eating competition, potato sack races, cornhole, volleyball, etc.) and the adults were entertained by an awesome band!  Here are some pictures.

Re: AW: Block Party Success

  • Looks like amazing fun!

DH and I along with our lone neighbors (theres only two homes in our neighborhood thus far) are going to try to throw a 'block party' for July 4th. Pretty much, we'll invite everyone we know :o)

     Congrats on your success!

  • Oh that looks like fun!!!!

I wish we could do that on our block - which we probably could, but there is no HOA.  Would it be tacky to send a letter around the neighborhood and see if they wanted to do a block party and then ask for donations?!  Hmmmmm

  • I wish we could do that, but our HOA says no no no. :(

I'm sure you could.  When I was a kid, we had summer block parties every year - and in a regular neighborhood w/ no HOA.  Someone would usually contact the police department to get permission to block off the road.  I don't know if the households ever contributed money (i.e. for a main course like fried chicken), but everyone brought a dish.

You could definitely do this!  And honestly if you ask everyone to bring a dish and have 1 or 2 families chip in on hot dogs, you would be all set.  You could make it BYOB and ask people to bring games (volleyball, cornhole, etc.)

Really???  You should see where your dues are going, and if there is any excess ask if it could be used for social activities?  Many of our social activities don't even cost any money (supper club, happy hours, etc.).

  • I wish we could use our HOA's for this. We're paying 30 a month (along with our neighbors paying another 30) for them to pretty much mow the grass along the road (not in front of our house).

Do you think we'd be in the place to ask to use the money? Hah

We pay $35 a month and about $10 of that goes to the social committee.  It depends on what type of insurance your HOA has, the cost of your landscaping and how built up your "emergency" fund is (there is a formal name for this but I can't remember it).  But you should be able to get some money.

  • That looks like so much fun!!  I'm glad you live in a community where you get together frequently!!

We have a voluntary lake association and usually have a "neighborhood party" in my cul de sac (so we don't have to actually close any of the streets) but it's NOTHING like what you all have done!  Maybe I could suggest some games and stuff for this years' party for the kids.  :) GREAT job!!
