Writing for $$$

I'm curious. Do any of you get paid for writing? If yes, what do you write?

I met a lady at a party this weekend. She said she just got a job as a writer for our state's tourism office. It made me wonder, what kind of writing jobs are out there?

With all of the time we spend writing on this board, shouldn't we get paid for our brilliant and humorous thoughts?

Challenge: Find 3 ways to get paid for writing (can be anything from a blog to a scientific journal). Post writing jobs that you find interesting. Include the details - company, project, pay rate, any special requirements.

Bigger challenge: Take a writing job (can be a one time deal or ongoing). Link us to your fine work.

Biggest challenge: Start a house-on-the-beach fund

  • I get paid to mark students' writing... but that hardly counts!

I wish I got something for writing, I really, really do.

With your background, something like this might be a good match. I don't know if it is legit. I'm just googling around looking for interesting writing jobs. $20/hr would fluff up the house-on-the-beach fund

  • I subscribe to a magazine called Music K-8.  It's basically a collection of original songs and teaching ideas for elementary music teachers.  The songs are all written by the magazine's staff, but they have a section at the beginning with creative lesson ideas sent in by actual teachers.  Payment depends on the length and breadth of the idea, but I have submitted about 6 ideas throughout the years, with 2 being published.  Each only paid about $30 (for a short paragraph), but hey....if nothing else, it's cool to see my name in print!

  • I am the editor of two newsletters for the organization that I work for...one is quarterly and the other is biannual, so in a weird way I guess I am paid to write.  I always have a "letter from the editor" type column in these newsletters and often write music education articles for them as well.  I also write sidebars and ads.

I'd love to find a way to generate some extra cash from blogging...any idea how to do that?

It appears that you make $$$ from blogging if you have ads on your blog or generate business for someone else. I have seen some that take donations (Lord knows how they set up a business to do that). Otherwise, I don't think you get $$$ for your awesome blog. I could be wrong.

I did most of my writing as an employee. I was a marketing director for over a decade. I wrote newsletters, press releases, web content, brochures and created their advertising. During that time, I was not allowed to do any freelance writing. In college, I wrote movie reviews for a small film magazine. It was fun, but more dimes than dollars. I don't know what kind of writing I want to do now. I just feel like writing.

  • my ex-bf was a writer for some sort of a local online sports news site - it helped that he was out of town b/c it's not like that type of operation could pay people to follow the teams everywhere.  He got press credentials for sports events and got paid about $100$250 for any articles they ended up using.  I think he mostly did it to get into sports events for free.  I don't know much about it, but I think he just wrote to the editors (with a resume and all that) it's relevant to this post b/c the funny thing is - apparently he was quite well known on the forums of that site (or maybe another sports site) so he listed his screen name and they selected him mostly b/c of his forum posts, not his english & business degree or corporate marketing experience.
