retirement account management clicky poll

Just had a 401(k) seminar at work to go over our choices and how to make them (without giving us too much specific advice of course).  I was interested to know how you guys manage your retirement accounts.

PS. Sorry, boring topic, best I could do. :)

Re: retirement account management clicky poll

  • I did a mixture. I allotted a certain amount and did preliminary research on which funds would be best as far as short-term and long-term diversity, risk/reward, etc. Then I plopped the money into them and haven't given it a second thought.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • I know this is ridiculous, but this is something I think about daily. It really bothers me that I want to know about investing, have had a 401K for 5 years, and yet haven't done anything about it.

I want to take one of those seminars; in fact it's on my 101 list to get that money better invested. Right now I contribute a percentage, and it's just in whatever accounts my 401K company puts it in Embarrassed

I don't know why I'm so bothered by this, but I feel like I know that I'm smart enough to learn how to invest, so why the heck haven't I?

Good for you for taking the seminar!

  • SLB - I don't think I would have gotten off my butt and done anything if they hadn't conveniently had a seminar at the office.  It really wasn't much more than what I can find out on the website (ours is managed through Fidelity), but the rep put it into terms that were easier to understand for me so that was very helpful.  And I haven't changed my allocations since I first enrolled either (and even then, I was just going by a combination of Morningstar ratings and my gut, haha).

I'm considering choosing the route where you just invest 100% into the blended fund closest to my retirement date that is managed by Fidelity and they slowly make it more and more conservative as you get closer to retirement.  I don't have the energy to put into this stuff, not even for rebalancing once a year (which the rep said you should do if you choose your own allocations) so I'm thinking this is the best route for me.

My uncle (who lives sorta near us) is a financial advisor/consultant/whatever and DH has his Roth IRA account through him but for some reason I've never gone to him for advice about this stuff, even though pretty much everyone else in our family has at one time or another.

  • I used to manage it myself, but once I got married, I delegated that to DH. He, along with our financial advisor, manage that stuff.

I get texts from DH along the lines of "Your 401k just went up!" - which is the extent of my involvement now.

    LOL, nice!

And our is through Fidelity, too. We have the seminars every other year, I believe, and I've missed it both times it's been at our office. I think there's one this coming January. Naturally, while I'm on maternatity leave. Awesome.

    DH does it.

  • DH does it for us too.

My job doesn't offer a 401k program so DH does both of our stuff through his job... and he handles it.  He tries to tell me about it but honestly, I have no idea.

  • As someone in the retirement biz, I would highly suggest speaking with a financial planner, looking at your financial goals for the future and choosing a mix that best suits your future. I am a big fan of paying the small fee for the company to manage your account. There is really no way you can stay on top of your investments in just a few minutes a week.
  • Our financial planner does it all for us.  DH used to do it and is really into that stuff, but neither of us have time.
