going beyond homedepot and lowes

where have you seen kitchen remodel items: counter tops, back splash (tile or other materials) etc.

I have found a few flooring companies that have the same stuff as the big box stores. I'm thinking of taking a stroll to the resale shop for habitat humanity. But would like some other places to look at if you have any suggestions!

Thanks Ladies!

Re: going beyond homedepot and lowes

  • There's a TON of stuff near on Rutland between Metric/Burnet Rd.  We found our tile and wood floors here:  http://www.high-techcarpets.com/

We went right down the street to Emser tile (open to public), where they stock every kind of tile and have a big showroom with all of the samples!  http://www.emser.com

If you're interested in granite - there's several slab yards in the area too.

  • Can't think of the name of the place right now, but there is a huge tile/flooring store on 183 and braker that has a great selection. If I think of the name I'll post it.
  • I very highly recommend Eco-Wise in S Austin.  http://www.ecowise.com/

Yes, some eco-friendly items cost more, but they are great at helping balance your budget with what you want.

I have not been to Element Supply, but they recently sponsored an event and I loved her materials samples. http://www.elementsupply.net/

  • for granite, we really liked Austin Granite Direct.  A bunch of nesties have used them and they beat the big box stores by 50% for us.

for tile, I've bought stuff from DalTile, Trinity Tile, and Flooring Warehouse (at 183/Braker that pp was talking about).  Dal and Trinity both have showrooms and Flooring Warehouse is more of a discount/giant store that has tons of tile in stock, but everything is pretty typical stuff that appeals to the masses - not alot of unique choices there, but really good price.

  • My IL's introduced us to Robert and Julie Peoples at Floor Coverings International when we did carpet in two bedrooms upstairs.  They do all types of floors though, and Robert will come to your house with a truck full of samples so you can see what they look like in your house.  We couldn't have been happier with the service we received from start to finish.

+1 for Floor Coverings International!  It was awesome to see samples in my own house--gave me a much better idea of what the finished floor would look like.

  • 5 star post! Thanks for bringing this up! I swear I'm going to get around to remodelling my kitchen soon!

And another recomendation for Austin Granite Direct. We used them for our master bathroom and loved them. I will definitly be using them for our kitchen.

Anybody got a cabinet rec?  Smile

No. The custom kitchen cabinets we ordered in February still aren't "finished drying".  Confused

  • I'm not sure of your price range but we we went with Austin Wood Works http://www.austinwoodworks.com/.  The cabinets were custom made & turned out perfect.  We had them build them to the ceilings and it made such a difference in the how our kitchen looks!

If you're looking for granite - I also have a granite person that we really liked.  The quality came out great and we are so impressed by the cuts/seams in the granite when they were installed!  I'll have to dig up their name though - its been awhile!  I know they're based out of Hutto area.

  • I just had complete custom built cabinets done and Lockhart Woodworks beat all other bids by more that $10K.  They tore out and installed in three days. The cabinets are two colors, two woods (alder and maple), big drawers, lots of pull outs, some glass doors, with feet and legs, and panels on all sides. Linda Bishop is the owner and was very easy to work with and helped ALOT on the design.  I can't say enough nice things about them.  Did I mention she saved us over $10K?!?!

Austin Granite Direct did all our countertops for a fraction of other quotes and we bought this backsplash for the kitchen online and had it shipped.
I fell in love with it and searched high and low to find something comparable locally and nothing even came close.
