So a coworker of mine introduced me to the world of podcasts.. and I've been downloading "This American Life" and "Stuff you should know". I'm becoming OBSESSED! Does anyone else listen to podcasts? Any good recommendations? I definitely recommend the two I listed. The stuff you should know podcasts are all free, and the archives are free. You can subscribe to This American Life for free, but it costs $0.99 to download archives, which IMHO, is still totally worth it.
Re: Podcasts
I'm an aspiring foodie, haha. I'd be a better foodie if I can more time. I'm going to check them out! What are food-related podcasts like? Like audible food-porn? haha
This american life? Every episode they have a different theme, and then they tell a couple stories based on that theme. For example, the most recent one is on Haiti, so they talk to some NGO's that do work there, some of the farmers... very interesting. It was more depressing than most... the last one was on Home Movies, and the main guy just did an analysis of 4 different people's home movies. It was sooo cute. And very interesting.
oh they wander all over the place topic wise. They sometimes do a "stump the cook" bit where people call in and say things like, "I have a can of tuna, a lime, a box of macaroni noodles, and some parmesean - what can I make?" and they come up with something delicious. Sometimes they just talk about food and how it plays into relationships, sometimes it is all about a certain ingredient, I dunno - stuff like that. Its always good!
I suppose it doesn't hurt that I just adore her books too. I can read her cookbooks like I read a novel because there is always some knowledge nugget embedded in the narration leading up to it about how to buy ingredients, how to tell if they're fresh, or just general tips and tricks.
This American Life is definitely my favorite. I think it is such a great show! I purposefully avoid listening to it on the weekends because the podcast is such a pick-me-up during the week when I'm having a bad day!
Depending on your tolerance for lewdness, The Dan Savage Lovecast is hilarious, and I just started downloading Wait Wait Don't Tell Me podcast. They're both free.
I also recommend, "The Story" and "Radio Lab".
I haven't listened to her on podcast but I catch her on the radio a lot on the weekends when I'm running errands! I always get frustrated because I want to write down all the good ideas she has but I'm usually driving!
Ooooh I just remembered that I subscribed to Radiolab last night, too, on recommendation from a blog I read. I've never listened to it but I'm really excited to check it out.
Actually, I download Radio Lab too, but I thought it was too sciency for some people haha.
Oh they totally do. I just didn't know that other people would necessarily be interested in things like famous tumors... haha. Which, was a GREAT podcast btws. I'm gonna try to make DH listen to them to help bridge the scientist-nonscientist gap we have.
I'm really no help, I'm just happy that I'm not the only one who downloads This American Life and Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me!
We also get Science Friday, but that is more for my H than me. Yep, we're NPR nerds.
