Staining Wood

Does anyone have experience with this, especially with staining a light wood dark?  We replaced one of our dressers recently and we have a pine dresser (which hasn't actually be finished yet so there's no stain on it) that we want to use for the baby's room to save buying another. The problem is, we want to go with the following crib and changer:

We're worried about completely botching the job as the colors will be so dramatically different or it looking funny, but really don't want to spend over $300 on a matching dresser.

Any advice?

Re: Staining Wood

  • The one thing that paint stores cannot match is stain color, but it sure would be nice if they could! I think sanding is the key to getting a nice finish when staining wood. For a big piece of furniture, I would recommend using a sander instead of doing it by hand, because sanding is a huge pain in the butt! Might take a few coats of stain too.

  • oo i really like that crib and changer!

what if you painted the dresser another color instead of having to stain it to match the other ones. depending on what color scheme you end up going with. maybe white would be pretty also. i love the look of furniture peices not matching.

  • after trying hard to match stains i can tell ya, it's not easy and I'd dare to say impossible for a novice stainer. haha

i vote paint!  I think mix matching furniture like that is nice anyhow :)

  • your pictures are blocked because I am at work but I have darker furniture in my kitchen and I got a piece that I use for storage and I stained it red. It came out awesome. And I think it looks good with the darker wood colors.

So maybe check out a colored stain?
