Credit cards

Once they hit their expiration date you should not be allowed to charge against them right?

I was going through my statement and a company that I have been unable to change my account information (i.e. cancel) with was able to charge against my card that the date expired on. I'm a little irate about it to the point where I want to call the cc company and yell WTF.   But I'm waiting until I calm down and make sure that I'm not completely wrong with my thought process.

Re: Credit cards

  • I'm not sure, but I wouldn't think so...
  • Nope, it's expired. It shouldn't even let the transaction go through.
  • I didn't think so...but I do know that not all companies change your cc # when they issue a new card to replace the expired one.

I would call, contest the charges, and call the company who charged you as well.

Good luck - I hope you get your money back.

  • It is likely that the charge was run through before the expiration date but that it didn't post until it expired.  Also, are we talking like your cc expired 4/10 and they charge was shown for 5/1/10?

This.  I changed my name on accounts and didn't get issued a new credit card number.  Although I know some places I have accounts with that charge to my card monthly (ie Netflix, XM Radio, and the toll system) all let me know that the card they have on file is expiring and the need to update my information.

  • The card itself expired in march and the charge went through on May 15th.  They didn't change the card number when they sent me a new one, just a new expiration date - so I wonder if that's why it was allowed.

I have tried dealing with the company through their website and calling.  The website says I am using an incorrect email address - yet its the same email that they send notifications to and calling them leaves me on hold for over 20 minutes each time.

I'm guessing what they did is took your old expiration date and entered a new expiration year 5 years after your old card expired. I think I may have a similar problem in a few months with the gym membership I'm trying to cancel. The card I gave them technically expires next month, but I wouldn't be surprised if they do the same thing.

  • What an effin drag man!  I hope you get it fixed soon.
  • I hope they shouldn't be able to do this because I have a similar situation that I am in as well.

My experience though is that you need the expiration date as well as the account number and if that date changes the card will not go through.

  • FWIW - They are able to continue to charge your card if the account number on your card has not changed.  Once it's on file they no longer need your expiration date.  effing awesome....
