Name Change - Nightmare!

I got married year before last and I finally decided to change my name. I waited because I use my maiden name for my photography business, but it turns out my hubby who claimed before the wedding that he didn't care - actually does care.So I wanted to surprise him and get my name changed so he couldn't make fun of me for not taking his name.

To make things a little more interesting I have two middle names and I wanted to keep my first name - use my maiden name as my middle name - and adopt my husbands name as my last name.

I go to DPS and they change the name on my license - no problem. Just like I wanted it.

I got to the SS office and they have a typo in the spelling of my original name AND my birth date was incorrect (they had the time of birth entered as the date). I've never even seen my social security card so I had no idea.

So I go to Vital Stats to get a birth certificate to get the other mistakes corrected. I discovered that my parents put my first middle name and my first name in the first name blank - meaning if I want to change my name to the name I want I'll have to go to court.

So... I go to the County Court to get a court order to change my name. While at court I give them my new drivers license with the new name I want on it... and they say because my name has already changed that I don't need to change it at the court and I should go back to the SS office.

Back at the SS office (now armed with my birth certificate, the courts recommendation, and my drivers license) I was told to go back to vital stats and have my birth certificate amended moving my first middle name to the middle name blank.

AAAAA. Ok. Back to Vital Stats. Vital stats recommends not changing my birth certificate. My dad died when I was little so he wouldn't be able to sign off on the change. She recommended going back to SS and taking numbers/talking to agents until I found one that would agree to changes for me.  I was skeptical, but at this point I was ready to try anything.

Back to the SS office. OMG the lady at vital stats was right! The first agent, again, rejected my request - but lucky for me ---- the second agent acted like it was NO PROBLEM and he fixed both my name and my incorrect birth date.

Now - after much legal wrangling... I officially have a new name. :)
