So, my boss is leaving and I am applying for his job.....
I have a few questions about resume stuff, and I am usually so bad at this stuff so I need help please!
First, the hiring committee knows who I am and how to contact me. So, I know the address and phone number are really just formalities, but do I use my home address and phone or my work address and phone (which would be the same as the hiring address).
Second, how should I organize my resume? Previously, I had it organized for lawyer jobs, so it would be "legal experience" and "non-legal experience". But now I am in the world of academia and "legal" vs. "non-legal" isn't really relevant. Basicaly, I have law firm type jobs and teaching type jobs on my resume - I was thinking "Academic and Teaching Experience" and "Other Experience". Does that make sense? What else could I use besides "Other"? Or should I just leave it all under one heading of "Professional Experience"? I was initially going to do that, but then some of my teaching jobs got bumped to page 2, and my law firm jobs (which are not as relevant to the current position) were up top.
Ooh, and one more question - how far should I go back as far as jobs that aren't relevant? I have the accounting firm that I was an admin assistant for in college (200-2002) - should that get cut?
Help! I hate resumes!
Re: Need resume advice please!!
Keep the name/address block that you originally had on your resume. That is standard so you can keep it the same.
I think useful categories for your position would be "academic and teaching experience" and then "legal experience" I'm assuming the job you are applying for is another academic and teaching position? If it is an administrative position, then consider highlighting those types of experiences within your job descriptions.
As for the admin assistant in college, 8 years ago, I think you can leave that out. You seem to have enough experience since then that is more relevant. I still have some college experience on my resume (graduated 4 years ago) and now I am wondering if I should take it off... but you can definitely take it off, if you have enough experience for an academic section and a legal section.
yes, I think I have enough for both sections, I'll give it the boot! Thanks!
I printed up the resume organized the two different ways, and I am definitely liking the one that separates teaching vs. not teaching jobs.
