I was just thinking about something.
When you have company over (for dinner, etc), do you have the tv on?
Basically, when we go over to the ILs, the TV is ALWAYS on in the background. It doesn't matter when it is, they even have it on during Thanksgiving dinner with a movie playing or something. It doesn't matter who's there, they did it when my parents were there for T-giving too.
IMO, having the tv on as background noise is rude. I think it's fine to have music on as long as it's not too loud, but the tv is just a distraction. I personally think that maybe they aren't good at conversation (well I know this already) and it makes them feel more comfortable to have it on.
Of course, DH grew up in that situation so now he has a habit of doing it sometimes but I tell him off as I don't think it's appropriate when you have guests over for dinner!
Re: RQOTD
We don't have the tv on when we have company over for a sit down dinner, unless the purpose of having people over is to watch a movie or sports or something.
MIL keeps her TV on during dinner too. I dont mind it, bc its a good distraction
Actually, I never thought of it that way. At least it saves me from interrogation!
We turn it off, unless the people coming over are there for a football game or something.
And when it's the in-laws (which is VERY rare... only happened once so far; thank goodness for the long distance "relationship"), we usually have the TV on Fox News just to have a distraction, something to talk about, etc. And it usually makes for fun conversation because my SIL and MIL haaaate Fox News. :-)
LOL. I pretend to be interested in the TV and like I dont even hear her. Works well for me
Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
We don't have that many people over because our dogs are nuts. When my IL's come over to visit the baby, we usually have the tv on (some sports game usually) and my FIL & DH talk about the game or whatever.
Usually when I go over my aunts house, the tv is on too. I dont see it as rude though.

usually not. growing up we NEVER sat at the table to eat dinner. we'd all fix our plates and go sit in front of the tv to eat. but at my grandmother's we always ate at the table (which wasn't near the tv) so it would be turned off
at our house now, we turn it off if we're eating at the kitchen table, which is pretty much always unless we're having people over to watch a game. we do always have music on though. I like to 'set the mood' haha. I feel like having music on makes everything more relaxed and fun.
dh and i do sometimes catch up on hulu shows while we eat when it's just us.
when we eat with my parents the tv is off unless we are watching a game or something
at mil house the tv is always on. it does not bother me too much
