related to my job... thanks!

Re: Work-related Poll

  • I selected Other because my company has two of the choices you listed (at least to my knowledge and what I have experience with).  My company offers peer and manager training for job-specific tasks.  For more basic/general things we have an e-learning program where you can select from a list of courses/topics and view at your desk.

  • I selected Other because they offer pretty much all of the above depending on what it's for.
  • All of the above.  We have some form of training at least twice a month.  Most are done via webinar but we also pay for off-site training and we have e-training done from our desk. All of it is provided by our company and training/tests are generated in house.
  • I PICKED BEING TRAINED BY ANOTHER EMPLOYEE OR SUPERVISOR.  FOR MY PARTICULAR JOB (THOUGH I AM TITLED RECEPTIONIST I DO A BUNCH OF ISH) I WAS TOLD ONE WOULD NORMALLY NEED MICROSOFT OFFICE EXPERIENCE AND OR KNOWLEDGE, I HAD NONE OF THAT.  ALSO A COLLEGE DEGREE WOULD NORMALLY BE REQUIRED BUT I GOT THE HOOK UP BECAUSE BL WAS MY NEIGHBOR AT THE TIME.  SO WHEN SHE GAVE ME HE JOB SHE JUST TOLD ME TO TEACH MYSELF EVERYTHING AS I GO.  FOR MOST OTHER POSITIONS THE PERSON WOULD NEED EITHER ONE OR BOTH OF THE FOLLOWING EXPERIENCE AND A COLLEGE DEGREE IN CHEMISTRY.
  • we have three- we have in company classes taught by our training department, training by a peers and online courses
Whether or not you find your own way, you're bound to find some way. If you happen to find my way, please return it, as it was lost years ago. I imagine by now it's quite rusty.”

  • My company is kick-azz and offers pretty much all of the above:

    - Formal training conducted by supervisors/managers/training folks who have themselves gone through training on how to train, one-on-one and in classroom settings

    - Online training for required trainings as well as optional training for people who are interested (on topics from managing stress to managing your boss)

    - Tuition reimbursement if you decide to take outside courses that are industry related.

    - Plusalso some other opportunities that I'm sure I've forgotten.

  • Uh, nothing really.  I basically do environmental permitting so my first couple weeks of work were spent learning applicable state laws, regulations, guidelines, etc.  After that I just sort of learned as I went along.

I do not believe this is the best way to do things.  It would have been nice to have been given even the most basic overview of how our agency operates, standard procedures for processing permit applications, our we interact with our sister agencies, etc.

  • I selected ecourses because that is the main offering, but we also have supervisor training and in-house "classroom" training. We also have a leadership course that's 2 weeks long that is required for all management to take within their first year with the company.
