My mom was in an airplane wreck and they had to cut off her clothes. I don't know how many times after that she told me to be sure to wear good, clean underwear everyday. She was glad she had been prepared.

I don't wear ratty underwear, but I wear the inexpensive hipsters from Hanes that come six to a pack at Target. I used to wear only VS and Gap Body (or occasionally other nicer brands) until I realized that they don't flatter my figure very well. Well, I still wear the Gap Body ones because I like that they are seamless.
I am so not a thong girl. If something is going to give me VPL, then I just wear spanx or tights to smooth out my bum.
I just wear those PINK VS hipsters with the random sayings on them. I wouldn't say they were nice, but they are fun! And comfy!
BTW, ditto the answer. I get those VS freebies and rotate those in with the others.

I only wear the see through lace thong Hanky Pankys. I have them in every color under the sun.
So, I think they always look nice - but they're comfy and I love them. I don't wear the "full butt" panties... I just can't do it. Honestly, I don't even own a pair of underwear that aren't thongs.

I'm all about the Hanes Hipsters. I do not wear thongs..ever. I'm pretty sure I have a VPL every work day and I don't care.
Speaking as one of the few nesties who cuts underwear off people on fairly regular basis (I'm an ER Nurse). I can tell you that I don't notice or remember any of the panties I've cut or removed in the last 4 years. I do remember 3 chicks who just weren't wearing any. Just wear some and we're proud. Fear not of Emergency personnel begrudging your choice of underthings
As for me, I wear what's appropriate for the situation or outfit. What looks sexy in the mirror just looks trashy when it's peeking out of the back of too small scrubs. Multiple offenders where I work to where they had to make an actually policy about it because there were complaints. Although I'm sure there were more uhh... men who weren't complaining!!!
I keep going through phases. Granny panties until after college, then mostly thongs, then bikini's after having Abby due to... post partum stuff. I'm just now getting back into thongs because your clothes fit looser and I could definitely use a little of that.
