Fresh Seafood?

I almost never cook fresh seafood at home.  Sure, I'll use a bag of frozen shrimp, but I don't cook or grill fish at all.

I'm branching out and trying something new, so where you do buy your fresh seafood?  The seafood counter at your grocery store?  Central Market?  Other?

I really have no idea if different places have different quality when it comes to fresh seafood!

Re: Fresh Seafood?

  • It depends on what I'm cooking and how I'm cooking it. But if I want "the good stuff" I'll go to Central Market of Whole Foods. One of my foodie friends swears by Quality Seafood Market on Airport, but I just don't usually want to make the trip.

  • i'm close to downtown, so i go to whole foods.  the people behind the counter are always very patient with me since i know nothing about seafood or how to cook it.  they've always given me great advice!

i have done crab legs from HEB before and they were fine (ok, i ate 2 lbs by myself).

  • Central Market.  They are great with advice as well.
  • Quality Seafood, Whole Foods, Central Market (in that order!).
  • hmmm. Embarrassed I generally don't have the time or money to buy seafood at Whole Foods/Central Market!  I cook fresh fish all the time and I generally just go to HEB, and cook it that night...
  • HEB.  The one in Bee Caves or the one at 360 and 2244.  They have a fantastic selection and the guys behind the counter are very helpful.

  • Central Market seafood is always great and fresh.  I just bought tilapia from Tom Thumb (Randalls) and though it was cheap, it was not good.  Not bad, but just not good quality at. all.

Haha - if you had to shop at the HEB near my house, you probably wouldn't buy the fish Stick out tongue.  I'm pretty sure our "neighborhood HEB" is the last truck on all the routes.  we get the worst of the produce, fish, etc.

  • Thanks, y'all!  Hopefully, this is the summer I become a good seafood cook!

mrsredraider we must live near each other. I go out of my way to avoid the HEB by my house. The one on far west is definitely my favorite!!! I can almost always find super fresh fish there and good cuts of meat.
