Neighborhood Recommendations for Newlyweds?

Hi There--

My new husband and I are currently living in a shoebox sized apartment in the South End. Although we love the area and all that it has offer, we are ready for a bigger space to accomidate all our shower/wedding goodies! We have only been in Boston about a year, and are looking to move a little outside of the city-- I work downtown and my hubby works in Burligton. I have heard good things about Jamaica Plain and Newton-- we would like to be out of "downtown", but still want to be able to walk to shops, restaurants, public transportation, etc. and feel like we are not too far removed from the city...

Our lease is up at the end of August and we would like to start checking places out soon-- Any recommendations as far as neighborhoods?? Thanks:-)

  • are you looking to rent?

I know a lot of people who live in Waltham or Allston/Brighton who really like it

If your husband is working in Burlington, it's not the greatest commute to JP... Newton is a bit better but can still be tough to get to the highway and going home would be a lot of traffic.

Arlington? Cambridge? Watertown? We rented in Belmont and loved it.

  • I'd consider Newton or Cambridge. What about South Boston? Belmont? Brookline?

I would never live in JP.

  • We live in Waltham and love it! We wanted to be close to the city as well and there's plenty to do in Waltham. Not a ton of shopping, but the restaurants are good and Newton has great shopping which is close by. Good luck!
  • I lived in Chestnut Hill for a while, and I loved it.  There was easy access to the green line, and still had a neighborhood feel to it.  If we could have afforded to buy there we would have.
  • I would really try to stay somewhere north of the city. Commuting through the city can mean double or triple the amount of time it should take. I'd look into Cambridge, Arlington, Belmont or Watertown. Newton and Brookline are good options too.

I agree. Although, parking in Brookline is a PITA unless you have a spot with your apartment.

  • Sommerville and Medford are both easy rides to Burlington.  I live in Medford, close to Arlington, now, and it's super easy to get to Burlington by taking route 3.  I would say anywhere by Davis Square would be a good option!

  • We love living in JP, and hope to stay here long term.  I used to commute to woburn, and the worst parts of my commute were storrow, and the 93/95 interchange.  i still usually made it there and back in 40 minutes.  we're on the end of JP that borders brighton/boston proper/brookline.  i'm hoping our next move will be more towards green street, pondside, or closer to our friends in west roxbury.

     GL with your move
