Re: any ideas, tips, suggestions on entertaining outdoors?

  • Plenty of seating.  Access to air conditioning.  Plenty to drink.  As far as bugs, eliminate any standing water where mosquitos would congregate.
  • Agreed.  If you don't have enough adult seats, ask people to bring them.  Make sure you have plenty of water.  Also be aware of the foods you're serving- if they need to be chilled use an ice bath etc.
  • We had our twins 1st birthday party in our backyard.  I put out baskets of organic sunscreen and bug spray for the children and regular sunscreen and off for the adults since most people will forget to bring this.  If necessary, keep the a/c on in the house so that those with very little ones can go inside to escape the heat.  Also a nice comfortable area inside for diaper changes with access to wipes and ointment just in case someone forgets to bring theirs.
  • Get this for the bugs (avail at Home Depot, Lowe's, several different brands).  We used it last summer on our very wooded lot (the bugs would pick you up and carry you away) and it really worked well, lasted about 4-6 weeks every time.

Serve your food in double containers to keep it chilled - fill a large dish with ice, then set the food in a smaller dish on top of the large dish.

  • thanks for the suggestions!!!! I always look for ways to make my guest comfortable
  • You can get some really cute vinyl table cloths at places like home goods, tj maxx, etc. I'd make it bright and colorful.

You could have canned/bottle drinks in big iced buckets ( I love this)

Depending what time of day, you could put out citronella candles.

    Have fun!

  • Citronella candles are a must and are very decorative!

If it is during the day we rake up the yard and lay tablecloths and throw pillows on the ground and do a buffet on our patio table.

We have a tiny house, but an enormous backyard and we love to entertain, so I feel your pain in trying to organize something like this.

Watermelons and ice pops are also a favorite cool me down summer treat for both children and adults.  :)
