RQOTD

Do you keep your doors locked at all times? Just at night? What do people typically do where you live?

If you have an alarm, when do you arm it?

Re: RQOTD

  • We always keep our doors locked when we're in the house, day or night. Unless we have them open if it's a nice day or we're doing something outside etc.

We arm the alarm every time we go out and at night when we go to bed.

From what I understand, most people keep their doors locked during the day here, even though I live in a safe area. My parents don't lock theirs, but in England, no one does and they're used to that.

  • Our backdoor stays locked at all times. If I am there by myself then I lock the door. If T is home then most of the time the door is unlocked. We def. always lock the doors when we go to bed and when we leave in the morning. We have been known to go to my parents house up the road and not lock the doors. I think generally people lock the doors around my area.

eta: i know my grandmother only locks her door if she is going to bed. the rest of the time the door is unlocked. it does not matter if she is there or not. she does lock her screen door if she is there.

We always keep our doors locked, I think that's the norm around here since we live in a city.
  • I always make sure to lock everything before bed. During the day our back door stays locked b/c I can't see it from the living area and Luke had gotten out of it before w/o me knowing. The front door sometimes is locked and sometimes isn't. If I'm in the living area I don't worry about it b/c I can see that Luke isn't going past me to get out. When DH is home he leaves everything open during the day b/c he's usually going in and out. I feel like I"m always checking to doors b/c If he's outside Luke is likely to try to go w/ him. I lock up everything when we leave the house at anytime.

I think alot of people leave their houses open during the day if they are home.

My grandmaw used to never..i mean never..lock their door..they also used to leave their key in the egnition of the car w/ the doors unlocked. lol

  • We keep all of our doors locked at all times (locked and deadbolted), even if we are home.

We don't have an alarm system but we are planning to get one at some point. Our house was not pre-wired for one, so we were quoted $1500 just for wiring. :(

The back door is unlocked during the day if it's nice out and if I'll be letting Satchel into the back.  The front door is pretty much unlocked unless we're not home or we're going to bed.  If I think about it, I'll lock the doors before I take a shower (when DH isn't home), but I often forget.

I don't know what other people in this area do, but I feel like our neighborhood is safe.  I'll admit that I do leave the doors unlocked when I take Satchel for a walk.  It's just easier than taking the keys.  I came home from a 30-minute walk the other day to discover that I apparently didn't close the front door the entire way.  Oops.

ETA: We don't have an alarm system.

  • If I'm home alone, the doors are locked. If DH is here, usually the front door and the door to the garage are unlocked because he is in and out a lot. When we go to bed, the doors are locked, and the garage door is shut. When we are gone they are usually locked. I can't say always though. I have no idea what everyone else does around here. I'd bet at least one of my neighbors leaves their house unlocked when they aren't home, and probably more than one house on our road is left unlocked, but we live in the middle of nowhere.

  • most people on this base actually do not lock their houses at all ever. i even have friends who are both off-island for 6 months (hubby is deployed, wifey went to D.C. b/c she got an internship while he's away) and they kept their door unlocked so friends can bring in any mail and/or "if anyone needs anything..." i would never do that! but some people just feel really comfortable around here.

if dh is gone & i'm going out for a 30 min walk or something, i'll leave the door unlocked. but at night, it gets double locked - always. i'd rather be safe than sorry!
