s/o..naming things

well, kind of a s/o.

i'm moving forward with taking a stab at event planning, but i'm going to start super easy. doing it on the side and charging next to nothing for the sake of experience (since i have no experience, i need it. i acknowledge the fact that planning my own wedding and a few other things does not make me the words best planner ever! obvi! lol). anyways, i've been battling business names for weeks now, and i've got it narrowed down to 3..but really mostly 2. so i'm looking for opinions please! :)

disclaimer: i don't want my name, or a variation of my name (or anyone's name), to be part of the business name. i also don't really want the words: event(s); gathering; celebrations; etc.., to be a part of the name either (can't explain, just don't really want it). also, these 2 names i know are free to register with the state. it's frustrating to come up with a name that you really like, only to find that you can't have it. FWIW: i really wanted the name "simply yours"....but a DJ on the other side of the state has it! argh!

 ok, so.....

Re: s/o..naming things

  • I haven't voted yet because I'm still debating, but I think "your moment(s)" sounds too short, IMO. Captivating moments has more syllables at least. And the connotation to captivating is something that holds your attention, and/or renders you speechless, breathless, in awe, etc. which I think is a good subliminal message to send with a business title since you're going to be event planning, and everyone wants their event to be captivating.

That being said, when someone says captivating moments, I think of photography, not event planning. I can't think of a replacement word for moments right now, but let me think and I'll get back to you.

  • i thought the same thing-that it makes you think of photography first.

    thanks for the help!

  • i voted the first

100% this. Maybe something like Amazing Moments, or you could go really cheesy with The Moment. lol. I'm sorry I'm not very creative.

I've been trying to think of something good all day.  A friend of mine started an event company not long ago, and two suggestions I had for her were:

    Freshly Pressed Events
it Events (with a slogan about dotting i's and crossing t's, hence the lowercase letters)

Now, neither of these fit your requirements since they have events in them...HOWEVER, she was looking to do non-wedding events and conjure an image of taking care of details.  What image or feeling do you want people to have for your business?  Are you doing only weddings or parties in general?  That will help me come up with better ideas.

  • I like Captivating Moments.  I agree the other two sound too short.  It kind of reminds me of photography, but if you're listed in the yellow pages you'd be under event planning not photography.  I don't think there would be much confusion.

  • aw, thanks for the input everyone!

DH and my dad think i'm thinking too much, and that as long as it isn't the worst name in the world..it won't matter. i don't entirely agree. but i can't firmly decide either!

i don't want to be pigeon-holed to weddings-all social events welcome (corporate events still somewhat intimidate me...for now!). i contemplated elegant events/elegant evenings..but it seemed like that could portray only formal events and not something a bit more casual like an afternoon event. i don't want the name to focus on myself; rather, i want it to somehow portray that i am simply there to act on your behalf for your event..whatever that may be. make sense?

anyone want to go soprano-style and threaten the DJ on the other side of the state to give up the name "simply yours"...because that is what i really would like! ;)

there are a few words that i do like, but could not figure out how to utilize them:
    charm/charming/charmingly
    sincerely

and if it were the right name, i would be open to using the term "events"...but i feel like the other word paired with it would have to be pretty key.

i thought about using the word "soiree"...but i figured if i had to look up how to spell it, that it might be a problem for people searching.

  • I'm not going to go Soprano style on your DJ because I don't think the name "Simply Yours" really suits your event planning business.  Or any business really, I think the DJ needs to reconsider, too.

Charmingly Yours Events might be nice.  I know you said you don't want to the word "Events" in your name, but that's what kind of business it is and it lets people know right away.

    What about using party?

Like...a Marvelous Party? Or something like Captivating Celebrations? Spectacular Shindigs? Now I'm just reaching! :)

I'll think on this some more!

Yeah, Simply Yours sounds like a stationary store.  Or lingerie shop.

  • well, i guess i'm not necessarily trying to make the name sound like an actual event planning business. it's not my event, it's someone else's.

other event planners in the area here are:

divine celebrations (sounds like a religious organization, if you ask me)
    gatherings by amanda
    trends to traditions
    perfectly planned
    simply stunning

oh, and that wasn't the name of our dj. it's some dj out on the other side of the state somewhere..haha
