Atlanta nestie headed to Austin!

Hi! My husband and I are coming to Austin for our nephew's high school graduation.  We have never been to Austin and are super excited.  I was wondering if anyone could recommend any great restaurants or places to see while we are there.  We'll only be there for a day and a half so we are limited on time.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!

Re: Atlanta nestie headed to Austin!

  • I recommend checking out the visitor's bureau: http://www.austintexas.org/visitors/plan_your_trip/

I think it pretty much sums up all of our answers, plus it's more specific to your date range/ location.

  • Since you're short on time, if you're going to be in the city of Austin, I'd definitely go check out the South Congress Ave. area (between Riverside and Oltorf).  Tons of cute shops, restaurants (and food trailers) that will definitely keep you occupied for a while!

  • Which part of town are you headed to?  That might help us narrow down some restaurant choices.
I would say to check out downtown one night (6th street, west 6th, 4th street).  Its somewhat age related. . . E 6th is more the college crowd, super cheap drinks.  W 6th is more young professionals, trendy more expensive bars. A bunch of the bars have patios up top which is awesome this time of year.  4th is kind of the same as W 6th.

I also am a big fan of south congress (SoCo).  I love Gueros & Home Slice for eating, and Doc's Motorworks for drinking/HH.  Be prepared to wait if you go there though, the rest of austin loves them too!

If you want to go swimming, Barton Springs is unique and fun. Its really cold - so I like it to be really hot before I go!

  • Thanks ladies!  We'll most definitely check out South Congress!  Sounds just what were looking for!  I'm so excited!  Thanks again!
