Atypical skin mole (cells)?

Has anyone had such diagnosis, or had them removed?

I notice a mole the other day that I hadn't seen before, I call the derm immediately and they were able to fit me in asap. Dr. said she doesn't like the fact that it just appeared, so she shaved it off and sent to path lab. I got a call, that it is a moderately atypical cell, and the dr. would like to make sure all the cells around it are removed to be on the safe side. I just don't know how much will the remove? do they dig in, and you get stitches, ...

Did they check the rest of your skin more closely?

Any information would be appreciated.

Re: Atypical skin mole (cells)?

  • I've had a few of those. The worst one was a little deep, but even it didn't require stitches. It's been a while since I've had them removed, but all the doctor did was shave a larger area of skin.

I was told just to keep an eye on moles for changes in size and color. Also, I was advised to not be in the sun without hardcore sun protection. Skin cancer has been in our family, though, so I'd rather be safe than sorry.

  • I've also had a moderately atypical mole removed. It came back a couple years after a shave biopsy, too, so I ended up having to have a scalpel biopsy with stitches recently. So if they suggest doing a more comprehensive biopsy, I'd do it the first time instead of the way I did it. :)
  • Who do you see for Dermo? I go to Austin Dermcare, Dr Fox He is also board certified in Dermatopathology, meaning he has special training in the identification of skin cancers. Everything he has ever wanted to remove from me came back atypical. Everything I talk him into scraping off, is nothing =)

For me and the type of atypical cells I have, he prefers to do an incision to ensure all the cells are gone instead of a shave. I have about 6 scars to show for it but none of them have ever come back, unlike the one I had removed from my chest at my old dermo that he had to go back and remove.

This website explains it very well

I've always felt confident the scars are worth knowing it's all gone. My modeling career is over anyway =P

You should definitely do a mole map of yourself to watch for changes. I have 2 I'm watching on myself right now. I went to the dermo every 6 months for almost 3 years and only recently got downgraded to every year (yay!)

  • My dr is Dr. Rhodes at Westlake Dermatology. I initially went to see her for a mole I have on my face, that was more for aesthetic reasons, but she talked me out if it. That was about a year ago, I do have a few moles under the watch, she measured them again last week and they haven't changed in size. She is board certified dermatologist, not dermapathologist, I think I will look into see if I can get into with Dr. Fox.

Thanks for all the helpful information.
