s/o smoking
we went over to some friends of ours this past weekend. they have a little girl who is about a year and a half old. they only smoke outside, but they were totally chain smoking around that poor little girl! I kept picking her up and walking out into the yard so she wouldn't be around it.
makes me so sad for her and mad at them!

i know..my parents smoked in front of us too. no idea if we were that young or not. things have changed a lot since we were little. does everyone remember that ad carrie posted of the 8 mo. pg lady drinking a guinness?? haha. i think what they did was wrong too though. i think there's a lot more information out there now about how horrible it is and these guys have no excuse.
i beggged my parents to stop smoking when I was little. i was so embarrassed of the smell on my clothes. i finally got them to only smoke outside instead of in the house. eventually my mom quit all together.
dh smokes a cigar on occasion and i'm ok with that, but he won't be doing it in front of the kiddos
ugh that makes me so mad when parents do that!
i was lucky my parents never smoked but on my moms side i can remember all my aunts and uncles smoking and even some of my older cousins. the only people that would not be smoking is me, my parents and my grandmother. eventually my grandmother banned all smoking in her house.
I do remember that ad, and you're right. I don't think there was enough awareness/studies/evidence of what happens when you drink or smoke.
DH smokes on occasion too with the guys. I don't see anything wrong with that, it's minimal and they always do it outside. My aunt smokes like crazy (and lives with my grandma). I HATE going to their house bc of the smell, and I reek when I leave. I hate it that she doesnt have enough respect for my grandma to quit or smoke outside.
i have a friend and she is preg and the guy dumped her when she got preg to go back with his x wife and threatened to take the baby once she has the baby.... it is a huge drama case.
anyways the dr told her that it was ok to smoke a few everyday bc she would have a nervous breakdown if she did not!
i was shocked that a DR said that!
DS got bronchitis after Easter, and I later found out my grandma and great-aunt were smoking when they had him out on the back porch with them. That and bad allergies did my poor baby in. He coughed like crazy for weeks. And they can't figure out why I won't let them babysit....
That is sad. DH's parents both smoked, and he said that he used to do his best to make them feel bad for it. His mom still smokes (and his dad did until he passed away).
I'm not at all trying to excuse the behavior of smoking around kids...but I do think that it's easy for us to forget sometimes that nicotine is addictive. Granted, I would think/hope that knowing the negative health effects it can have on your child would be a good motivation to quit, but it's still hard (especially if they really are "chain smokers").

I know it's addictive. my mom is still actually addicted to the 'patch' and 'gum' that's used to help you quit smoking. she's been using those for years and I wish she could stop, but at least it's better than smoking.
the mom of this little girl did stop when she was pg and for months afterwards b/c she was breastfeeding. then she just started back. the dad has also stopped for months at a time here and there.
i don't know if they always chain smoke, but they def did while we were there. i even called the husband out asking if he wanted to take a break. he was literally putting one out in the ashtray and lighting up a new one immediately after
ugh, I dont know how people can do that. I would have migraine headaches like crazy if I attempted that. Not to mention be so sick to my stomach.
DH's mom smoked through all 5 of her pregnancies and in their house, around the kids, and it was just the norm. I dont want to blame her smoking, but it could be directly related-DH has really bad acid reflux, SIL has skin issues and acid reflux and other issues, and BIL has crones disease. The other two BILs seem fine. DH actually picked up his first cigarette when he was 13-14 that his mom left in the ashtray. He tried it and just kept doing it ever since. He smoked all throughout high school, in the marines, and then he quit when he got back from Iraq. He would pick it up again every once in awhile, and now he only smokes when he's with the guys. I'm okay with him smoking cigars in front of the kids, (not so that they inhale the smoke, but I dont mind if they see him doing it from afar or from the inside of the house) but he will never be allowed to smoke cigarettes anywhere where they can see him. I would like it if he would quit even when he's hanging out with the guys, but they only hang out every once in awhile. He doesn't buy them anymore. MIL has since quit since DH's littlest brother was born. She almost died after giving birth to him because she was hemorrhaging so badly. After that, she decided to quit and get healthy.
OMG, that is crazy!!!!
