Is this a racist statement?

From the Gilmore Collection's website about "Eve Lounge:"

Eve is the beginning. Experience a posh and cosmopolitan night spot like no other. Lead across a lit glass walkway, over the crowds, and through a glass entrance our guests are invited into the newest, most modern, freshest space in The B.O.B. Feel the sound with an intelligent crowd, dance the floor with the exclusive party, taste from the bar in a different nightspot four levels up from the ground. Eve has been created. Eve is now downtown Grand Rapids and is revolutionizing social and corporate events. Sleek, white and intimate, the genuinely classy lounge is pocketed with coves and corners for privacy and conversation. The keys are individual smart service, specialty upscale cocktails, and hip, contemporary service.

Indifferent What does this mean?!  Of all the ways to describe a place- this can't be a mistake, can it?

Re: Is this a racist statement?

  • It's decorated in white decor - it could have been worded much better on their website than that.

     See pictures.

I never would have inferred anything racist from that sentence. MB is right, they're describing decor.

    THIS.

As far as I can remember, clubs decorated in all white were/are all the rage in Miami/South Beach.

This.  I don't see how that could be seen as racist.  To me they're just describing a room.

  • I agree with everyone else.  The decor is primarily white and they mentioned that aspect in their description.

It means it's white. As in, the color. Is it racist to say that my toaster and coffee maker are black?

  • Hm well obviously I'm in the minority here.  Perhaps I should give it more of a Huh? and less of a Indifferent .  At the very least I think it is poor choice of wording.

    Thanks for weighing in.

  • I don't see how there is any mistaking what that means.  You're reading into something that isn't there.  They are describing the bar decor.  Sleek, intimate, white - as in the color of my car, or linens, or walls or chairs. Nothing more to it.

  • hehe.  When you ask Maria what her favorite color is, she says "everything but black".  ouch!  She's so innocent.

How would you have worded it?

  • I'm so confused as to how this could possibly be racist. If I describe my bathroom as "Spacious and white" that's racist?  Is describing Little Mexico Restaurant as Mexican racist? I guess I don't see how using the word white or black to describe an object equals racism.

  • Definitely not....that never would have crossed my mind. It's a beautiful space and is decorated in all white.

I'm curious to know this as well. Perhaps there's something that I'm just not seeing?

Just  "...with a sleek all white decor..."   It is not just the word "white" that struck me the wrong way, but the way it was used ie: the same way you hear a neighborhood described as  "a white neighborhood" or a "black neighborhood" or a "white school" or a "black school."

I know the description is referencing the decor, but I was suspicious that there is a second purposeful message in there.   Maybe I am overly suspicious after that whole "no white T-shirts or tennis shoes" thing at Monte's a few years ago.

See that seems to wordy to me. The description as a whole is kind of short and choppy. If you put that sentence in there it would change the whole flow. At least that's what I think.

I really think you're reading way too much into this and looking for ways to make it into a racist statement.   Sorry.

"Feel the sound with an intelligent crowd..."

    Yes

Since I've been there and reading the description in context, I don't think of it as racist.  However, I do see where you're coming from, Jillian.
