We have a Canon T1i that we'd like to take with us on trips. The camera bag it came with is a little bulky to carry around, so I end up just throwing it in my purse -- not the best.
We're looking for 2 bags -- 1) backpack to carry on the plane with our laptop, extra lens, flash, charger, etc. and 2) small, sleek carry bag to take on excursions and day trips.
Any suggestions or tips for features we should look for? TIA!
Re: Digital SLR Camera Bag?
This doesn't really fit your criteria but they're super cute:

I just got this one for my NikonD40. I like that it's relatively small enough to fit in my purse (which is a medium sized tote bag these days)
It has enough pockets to hold the battery charger and USB cord, etc. and can be carried on it's own on in a bigger bag, if need be. It also has a belt loop if you're so inclined (or DH is) to wear it that way if you're hiking around, etc.

Super cute Christine! Too bad they're so pricey...I couldn't justify the purchase, but if I were a pro I think I'd have to have one of these for my daily grind!

1) backpack to carry on the plane with our laptop, extra lens, flash, charger, etc.
We're still looking for one ourselves. Thinktank and Lowepro have some nice ones. Sometimes the Thinktank bags aren't the easiest to access when it comes to grabbing your gear and some of the laptop Lowepro bags seem too clunky. Both are very reputable brands. We're leaning towards the Thinktank Streetwalker HardDrive.
2) small, sleek carry bag to take on excursions and day trips.
We have the Lowepro Slingshot 200 and love it. We take it hiking and traveling. It's super easy to grab your gear because you can swing the bag to your front without having to take it off. We are able to hold 1 camera, 1 telephoto lens, 1 wide angle lens, 1 50mm lens, extra batteries, flashcards, graycard, cleaning kit, charger, flash and diffuser, etc. You can move the compartments around to make it work for what you want to carry. When traveling, I also squish in a bottle of sunscreen, hand sanitizer, map and wristlet wallet. I don't recommend the smaller model (100) because it's too small. The larger model (300) might also work for you however I feel that it's too clunky if you plan on lugging it all day. Also, while we love the Slingshot, I sometimes have a hard time carrying it since I have big boobs and I am very self concious about it. I'll carry it if I'm wearing something hefty like a fleece or sweatshirt but not if I'm wearing a T-shirt. Just something to think about if you are in the same boat.
Let me know if you find a laptop-camera bag you like!
I have exactly the same camera and the same issue! I have a large purse, so for now, I've been wrapping my DSLR in soft drawstring bag and carrying it around in my purse. I am considering this bag though:

This is what I use for my T1i. Its a Lowepro Slingshot 100. Fits nicely with an extra lens + flash + charger. Nice for going hiking, excursions, etc.

UPDATE: We went to the camera store today to check out some bags in person. Hubby had been doing some research and liked the Tamrac Adventure 9 (http://www.ritzcamera.com/product/444765408.htm), which he'll use as his carry-on to hold camera + goodies and laptop. There's also a small compartment at the top to hold some other stuff (maybe a change of clothes).
We checked out the Lowepro slingshots for our daybag, but ulitmately decided against it. The bag's not collapsible, and it would take up too much valuable space in our suitcase to justify it. For now, we've decided to get a neoprene sleve (http://www.amazon.com/TECH-SOFT-POUCH-DIGITAL-D-SLR-Zoom/dp/B0006HHV90/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I11RDTWOHXQYP8&colid=2D7C7ZGJENEIV) to keep the camera protected. Depending on our plans for the day, we'll either carry the big backpack or use the neoprene case and throw it in my purse.
We may end up picking up one of the Lowepro slingshots for carrying our camera around while at home, but we're not planning to use it for our upcoming trip...
