Feline diabetes - dust for kitty, please
UGH. It's been a rough few days. I took my boy cat to the vet after noticing a really sharp weight loss and the bloodwork shows that he has diabetes again. We've been down this road before. He was on allergy shots a few years ago that brought on diabetes. We treated with insulin and quit the shots and he got better. (Unfortunately, it was a moderate hypoglycemic episode that cued us on to this, which was scary as all hell.) Now it's looking like if we want to keep his other health problems under control, we're going to have to take the diabetes right along with it. 
I don't mind the treatment, I just feel like a bad cat mom and I hate that the little guy is sick.
Anyway, if you can spare some dust for him, I'd really appreciate it. Also, any recs for a pet sitter that can handle injections and glucose monitoring, would be great.

one of our cats had diabetes. He was dx in May 2006 and he just died this past December or January. He was an old guy, so I'm willing to bet he died of old age and not diabetes complications.
The injections aren't too bad, but sometimes the cat will try to run from you. I got so good, I could just grab his scruff, poke him and he wouldn't even notice. If you have any questions or need any help with anything, let me know! I hope your kitty lives a long life w/ the diabetes, it IS possible!!
oh, and pet sitters. we called this one lady -- recommended by our vet, actually -- and she sat for our cats when we would leave town. She was able to give Shylo his shots and came at night to give him his DM canned food too.

I'd check at your vet about a pet sitter. usually they say they can't rec anyone, but one of the techs might offer.
I have a diabetic kitty too- he could care less about the shots and thinks it's AWESOME that he only has to eat canned food now. dry food shoots up their blood sugar so definitely a good idea to go all canned.

oh yeah! I remember that now. I kept meaning to ask how your kitty was doing, had no idea he had gotten past the diabetes--my vet said it was possible but I did not believe him! haha.
(about the "bad kitty mama" thing? honey, not many people would actually pay to keep a diabetic pet around. believe me, I know--I worked at an animal hospital and lots of people thought that diabetes=death sentence and would put their pets down. It isn't true. You're a great kitty mom b/c you care enough to take care of your pet.)

You just totally made me cry again. I've been through a lot with this little guy and he's totally worth it.
Anyway, he "recovered" from diabetes the first time probably because he was induced by the shots. Once those made their way out of his system, he needed less and less insulin.
Unfortunately, though, it looks like he's been borderline diabetic all along, so not that recovered.
