I'm thinking of going back to school...

Just online, though.

I found a school that offers a Bachelor's in Criminal Justice and that really intrigues me... hmmm.

Am I crazy for thinking of going back to school at 27?

Re: I'm thinking of going back to school...

  • and FWIW, I was a semester from graduation at BGSU with a BA in Telecommunications when I dropped some classes and then lost my focus, so I have a lot of core classes out of the way.
  • Why don't you just finish at BG? They have a lot of online classes available now. If you really want to do an online degree I would do one through a regular university that offers online degrees. I would stay away from the phoenix online type universities.
  • I don't want to go back to BG. It's expensive and when I was there they hardly had any good courses online.

I'd go back to school and do classes on campus but with the kids and biz its too much for me.

  • And actually, glancing at the online page for BGSU they only offer 4 BAs in nothing I want to do.
  • DH and I looked into ITT tech for him and it was INSANELY expensive..and credits don't transfer.  So, for him to get an assoc. degree, he would have to go back to ITT to get a bachelors, he couldn't just go to UT or something.

There are a lot of options out there right now, just make sure you check them all out before committing to something.

    Good luck!

  • Linds, I was looking at Capella. DH contacted them and they told him his credits would transfer.

I also found that they have a graduate program in CJ online as well if I ever want to pursue that.

  • I don't think you're crazy at all! Hell, I've been in school on and off since graduating high school in 2002 and I'm still not finished. Just takes some of us a little longer to find our desired field and our true focus.

My first clinical instructor from a couple semesters ago got her masters online from pheonix I think, and she loved the online thing. Personally I hate hate HATE online classes. They are usually more work and take up a hell of a lot of time. So just make sure you don't start with too many classes at once. And definitely triple check that all of your credits will transfer before starting a program!

Good for you though!! A lot of people say they want to finish/go back to school and then never get around to it (my sister).

  • I looked into Phoenix once, very expensive!

I agree with you 100%!!!!!  If I had known that my almost all of classes for my degree at UT were ONLY offered online, I may have thought twice about taking my position.  Don't get me wrong, I am grateful that my tuition is being paid for, but I hate online so much.  Like Tami said, they are usually much more work.  Plus, I feel like I get less out of most of my online courses.  I have only had two classes that I felt I got about the same I would get out of a class in person.  Plus, UT actually charges more for their online courses b/c there is a technology fee thrown in, and your tuition is the same.  So, I guess, for the most part, I feel like I am not gaining much with my master's degree.  I know some people love online, but I am just not one of them.

Good for you for wanting to finish school though!  Like Tami said, many people talk about it, but never finish.  Good luck!!

Why would this be crazy?  I didn't enter a college classroom until I was 24...didn't finish my associates until I was 31, and got my BS when I was 35.  And I had plenty of classmates much older than me!

No, you're not crazy at all.

  • And for what it's worth I'm not a huge online class fan (did plenty of them when I went to Lourdes)...I guess I'm not disciplined enough for them.  But, DH is 1 class short of his bachelors degree (in Criminal Justice)...he's had difficulty in getting it finished because of work and National Guard obligations.  He is using Phoenix to finish.  The credit does apparently count at Lourdes.  Just it is expensive...and honestly?  Seems like he had a lot more work than I did for the same class.

  • My only advice would be to check out the possibility of finding a job in whatever field you choose before you go through all that work to obtain your degree. I know so many people who graduated, then it was basically impossible to find a job afterwards.
  • My mom went back to college at 44. I don't think you are crazy at all for wanting to go at 27.

I still have my business so that's not a huge deal for me... I really want to finally have a degree. I need to prove to myself that I can do it... and CJ really interests me.

  • I agree I think you should see about a a job shadow or something.

I know we had an "intern", who was like 30 something.  She was in social work forever and one day decided maybe TV.  So she hung out with us for a semester-ish I think it was the fall, before deciding if she wanted to do it.  We hire her now for freelance stuff every now and then.

  • LT that would be good. :)

I would just go and finish my Telecommunications management degree at BG but I know I'll never use it... I have no desire to work in that field anymore. (too much turn-over!)

  • Go for it! :)

And FWIW, I liked my online classes, and tried to get them as often as I could.  I did occasionally have trouble with motivation (like the class where I had a 4pg paper due every Sunday by 5 and most weeks I was writing it Sunday at 4:30....)  but overall I really enjoyed them.  :)

Oh, also, one of my friends just did her entire MBA program online through U of Findlay and absolutely loved it! :)

  • It?s not at all crazy to go back to school at 27. People much older than you go back to school to fulfill their long cherished dreams and if you want to get your degree, don?t let you age bog you down. Besides, with online college degrees, you won?t have to sit in a classroom full screaming students. You can study in the comfort of your own home, pretty much set your own schedule, and learn at your own pace.
