Just wanted to check it. I've been lurking the past few days, but not really posting. I'm pretty heartsick and I don't want to be a downer all the time.
By now I'm sure you all know that the President came to Grand Isle yesterday. I'm pretty disappointed in his trip. He did not go to the beach where the oil really is for some reason. He went to a different one where only tar balls have washed up. He did not meet with any private citizens. He stayed tucked in the gated, locked Coast guard station where the only people who were allowed there were federal, state and very few local leaders...and of course the press. It's good to hear him take responsibility and make very big promises, but we will see what happens now.
I heard James Carvelle on Anderson Cooper last night say that Obama can promise to triple the response all the wants, but not to expect anything because 3 times 0 is still 0! That is an exaggeration of course, but it shows how much faith everyone has around here.
Much more than the president's trip, I am disgusted by what BP did yesterday. They staged 300-400 workers doing clean up as the president flew over the beach. As soon as he was out of sight, before he even left, they boarded the school buses that brought them there in the morning and were outta there. I haven't heard yet if they were back today or not, but after the national news picked up the story I'll be surprised if they didn't organize something for this morning just to make it look like they didn't pull that big stunt. Either way it is NO coincidence that the clean up crew went from 20-400 on the day the president was in town. Another bothersome fact of this is that these people who were bussed in yesterday may have been prisoners on work release. #1. forced into handling potentially dangerous chemicals/oil without much choice in the matter and #2 there are 100s of fishermen and other out of work people who signed up and took training classes w/ BP to do clean up (for pay), but they have been sitting and waiting for a call to go to work...they were not called..instead they used these people.
Anyway, i'm sure y'all are tired of hearing about this, but I just wanted to come vent a little..
I'm headed to the island today. I'm bringing my camera. When I cross that bridge I better see those school buses..
Y'all have a good weekend...happy memorial day!
Re: hi all. kinda long.
I think most people are disappointed in how our president has handled this situation. Do you remember about a year ago when there was all this hype over the situation with the white cop and black professor at Harvard. Obama was all over that situation, spoke about it in his press conference, and even held a meeting at the White House with him and the two men involved. Somehow he found that to deserve way more of his attention than the national/world crisis that is evolving down in the Gulf. This is what is SO frustrating to me! His priorities are so off base that it's ridiculous. You know that when Carville, one of Obama's biggest supporters, is frustrated that something is definitely wrong.
Anyway, seeing those images of the oil coated water and marine life is just heartbreaking to me. Not to mention the toll it's going to take on the economy there. I swear, every time I watch the news, it makes me want to hop on a plane down there and help with the clean-up. I was actually thinking how cool it would be if we did finally get to have our NOLA GTG and all volunteer for the clean-up. But I know that's just not possible since we all have busy lives. The best I can offer right now is prayers that the top kill works and that the Gulf can get cleaned up as quick as possible before too much gets destroyed. Keep us updated on what you hear Tiff.

Im sorry
It has to be/ is frustrating to have waited over a month for the oil to stop and nothing yet. I don't understand why Obama is not putting his foot down and making BP close this rig down permanently. Thanks for telling us the real truth behind what's going on down there. I just told DH about how BP put hundreds of clan up workers on the beaches then bussed them right back out- he read that too on drudgereport.com We check this website for breaking and truthful news stories.
Keep us posted, and T&P to you guys!
