So, DH wants to go to UNC

We have lived in Oregon our entire lives and DH has yet to go to school.  I know it will be a huge adjustment (especially since neither of us has ever moved anywhere else), but what are your perceptions of where you live?  We have some family who live in Greensboro, but it's nice to hear other opions.

So, is NC a good place to raise a family?  Lots of stuff to do?  Any suggestions on local hospitals to look for work?  Areas of Chapel Hill we should look to rent in.  Or is the commute to UNC from Raleigh or Durham okay?

We're talking about moving the first of the year and it feels overwhelming to know how much stuff there is to do and look at! Thanks so much for any insight you might shed!

Chapel Hill is a beautiful area and very family friendly.  The Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) has lots to offer.  Chapel Hill also has great schools.

My only advice is don't move without a job.

  • I'd live in Chapel Hill and commute to Raleigh, I wouldn't live in Raleigh and commute to Chapel Hill (well, living in certain parts of Raleigh and commuting to Chapel Hill would be fine, others would drive me crazy commute wise).  The main road to get between the two is I40 (there are of course back ways) and it backs up in the afternoons going from CH to Raleigh, but not so much in the other direction unless there's a wreck.

For the most part, the commute between Durham and Chapel Hill isn't a problem.

I love this area, we won't leave the Triangle (Raleigh Durham Chapel Hill) unless we move to the beach.

There are a ton of local hospitals, I'd apply at all of them.  You'd get state benefits with working for the UNC system, but the Duke system also has great benefits as well.  There's also Wake Med and Rex (which is affiliated with UNC now but I'm not sure exactly how the affiliation is structured).  We are very fortunate with the number of health care systems here, but I agree with PP - do NOT move here without a job.

What areas of Chapel Hill I'd suggest will vary according to your price range and exactly what you're looking for in a home or neighborhood.  I lived in CH for three years and really enjoyed it.  I've also lived in Durham and am now in Raleigh.

  • I came to NC for graduate school (lived in Durham and Beaufort). I moved away for a little while and came back with DH so he could attend graduate school. We currently live in the Triad (Greensboro, High Point, Winston Salem) and we enjoy it. We hope to continue living here after DH finishes school.

I think there would be lots to do in the Triangle and it would be a fine place to raise a family. There are lots of hospital options as pp mentioned.
